K1 Employment Eligibility

Hi

I arrived into the US on the 5^th of August on a K1 visa. I am a little confused about the employment eligibility process. I have read alot of conflicting information on the subject, so i thought I’d better try and get some clarification before progressing my application.

My question is, can I apply for a social security number, before I have submitted my EAD form? Or will the social security office require a completed EAD before providing the social security number?

Lastly, will I be able to start employment with only a Social Security number? Eg while the EAD is processing.

You can get SSN before EAD.

You won't be able to work until you get your EAD, which you'll submit with your AOS. Having an SSN alone is not enough to be able to work. It'll take about 3 months for you to get your EAD back from when you submit it.

You can apply for a SSN 14 days after your arrival, it depends on how fast they get you in the system. It could be a few days, a week, two weeks. Take your recent I-94 (printed out) with you and your passport with visa when you go to the SSA office.

And no, you can not work while your EAD approval is pending. Clearly.
