Uma Blanchard, 21, and Sophie Goeks, 20, didn't set out to circumnavigate Lake Superior by kayak as part of some large, noble pursuit.

Sure, the college students thought they might be the first all-female team to accomplish the feat, or maybe the youngest women.

"We didn't set out for it to be something like that. For me it was like, this is my last summer before I graduate college and this is something we've been wanting to do this since we were probably 15 years old," said Blanchard, a West High graduate from Iowa City entering her senior year at Bowdoin College in Maine.

But after the pair heard about two other 20-something women -- recent University of Minnesota-Duluth graduates Erin Denny and Lexi Bruno -- attempting the same feat, they realized their trip had the potential to be more than just a big summer adventure.

"One of the main reasons (Erin and Lexi) wanted to do it was to inspire other women in the outdoors, because working as a woman in the outdoor industry can be incredibly difficult -- there's a lot of sexism," said Goeks, who, with Blanchard, worked as a kayak guide for Camp Manito-wish's Outpost program out of Boulder Junction, Wis.

"Being out in the woods is great and can be so much fun, and being a woman is not a reason to not do it." "I really hope that reading about us and Erin and Lexi can be an inspiration to other women," she said. Goeks, from Cedarburg, Wis., and Blanchard set out from Little Sand Bay on Wisconsin's Bayfield peninsula on May 25. Their goal: to kayak the lake's 1,200-mile circumference in 90 days.

01-23-2008 = Consulate gets file; outdated Packet 4 mailed to fiancee 1/27/08; rec'd 3/3/08.

04-29-2008 = Fiancee's 4-min. consular interview, 8:30 a.m.; much evidence brought but not allowed to be presented (consul: "More proof! Second interview! Bring your fiance!").

05-05-2008 = Infuriating $12 call to non-English-speaking consulate appointment-setter.

05-06-2008 = Better $12 call to English-speaker; "joint" interview date 6/30/08 (my selection).

06-30-2008 = Stokes Interrogations w/Ecuadorian (not USC); "wait 2 weeks; we'll mail her."

07-2008 = Daily calls to DOS: "currently processing"; 8/05 = Phoned consulate, got Section Chief; wrote him.

08-07-08 = E-mail from consulate, promising to issue visa "as soon as we get her passport" (on 8/12, per DHL).

08-27-08 = Phoned consulate (they "couldn't find" our file); visa DHL'd 8/28; in hand 9/1; through POE on 10/9 with NO hassles(!).
