Hey everyone,

Yesterday I went to my biometrics appointment. My appointment was at 1 pm, however we arrived a bit early and they helped me as soon as I had completed the form. They took my fingerprints and picture and I was actually outside before 1 pm. This was at the Fort Wort, Texas office. It seemed that if you have your appointment letter you can walk-in there because the officer didn't even look at the date and time of my appointment.

Now the waiting continues... *Fingers crossed* it will go fast. How's everyone coping with not being able to work yet?

Glad you got it done easy. :)

I'm fine with not working as I'll be home with my boy until he is good with school, english and homework and so on BUT I REALLY need that EAD so I can drive!! Totally make me go crazy not driving!! It has been the worst part for me. On day 47 so still a while to go.

I was under the impression that with your NOA1 and your social security number you could get your drivers licence... am I wrong to say that?

Still no NOA hard copies after 21 days (and only one electronic NOA notification). They say they have our paperwork and we have receipt numbers at least, but I am uncomfortable with my husband traveling without the hard copy. We are flying out tonight to California for a visit and I am afraid they might give us trouble at the airport. Does anyone have any suggestions of what else we could take with us to be safer?

Make it pay stubs for 6 months.

Letter from employer (on their paper with logo and that) where it stats her job, money she makes and ours and it's permanent.

Also her tax returns.

If she is only just above the poverty guideline then that can be the issue.

Yup, we decided to go with 6 months of paystubs and her offer letter. She was a student last year so her previous year's tax returns are below the poverty guideline. This year she makes between 60K-80K so hopefully that should cover it.

Just for redundancy, we are also attaching our investment accounts and bank accounts which show we have more than 3 times the difference between the 125% of Poverty Limit figure and her previous year's tax returns.

My Timeline

  • Sent in AOS Package - September 8, 2016
  • NOA1 Hardcopy - September 23, 2016
  • Biometrics Letter - October 2, 2016 (Scheduled for October 10, 2016)
  • Biometrics Walk-In - October 3, 2016 (Successful)
  • RFIE - October 6, 2016
  • Response to RFIE Sent - October 14, 2016
  • Response received text from USCIS - October 20, 2016
  • Interview has been scheduled for December 6, 2016 - November 7, 2016 (Text and Hardcopy notices within 12 hours of each other)
  • EAD/AP Approved - November 8, 2016
  • Green Card Approved - December 6, 2016

It if different from state to state. Some states that will be fine but others like mine I need the EAD card first.

Here in NC I had a long conversation with DMV office about how those of us on the K1 fall into a black hole for verifiable immigration status we can use for the licence. They were very sympathetic and suggested that I speak with the sheriffs office to determine where I would stand legally if I drove using my U.K. license until I was able to get a valid NC license.

I was told by the sheriffs office that as I could not obtain a valid state issued license until I had my EAD that I could drive using my U.K. license so long as I had the appropriate insurance, I was advised to carry my passport and NOA1 which I happily did, my husbands insurer were fine insuring me on a U.K. license until I could get the NC one

Maybe if you speak to the sheriffs office for your state they may say the same?

Everything crossed for a smooth and stress free journey

Nope won't help. It's still driving without a DL and is looked at badly if stopped. Also insurance won't cover accident if not a valid DL so even though I'm on our insurance it's not worth doing it.

We're in the same boat and to be on the safe side, we'd rather wait for the EAD to get the DL for my wife. This way there's no "uncertainty" or "blurred lines" of any kind

Submitted docs 08/31

Priority date: 09.02.16

E-NOAs: 09.13.16/ paper :09.16.16

Bio notice: 09.27.16

Bio appt: 10.12.16

Useful fyi: I am using my noas to apply for university. Just incase anyone was iterested in going back to school you can start the process using those docs.

I estimate by the time I start school I will have my GC which can be used for added benefits.

When I get my EAD I will persue my DL. I didn't apply for the AP simply because we are broke so can't travel plus I have read horror stories about people being questioned etc and the pissibility of not being admitted into the US after travel. There are positive stories too but I'd rather not test my luck.

I'm already looking at jobs, I see quite a few that I could apply for but will wait until I have the appropriate docs.
