SANTA CLARA, Calif. -- San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick has willingly immersed himself into controversy by refusing to stand for the playing of the national anthem in protest of what he deems are wrongdoings against African Americans and minorities in the United States.

His latest refusal to stand for the anthem -- he has done this in at least one other preseason game -- came before the 49ers' preseason loss to Green Bay at Levi's Stadium on Friday night.

"I am not going to stand up to show pride in a flag for a country that oppresses black people and people of color," Kaepernick told NFL Media in an exclusive interview after the game. "To me, this is bigger than football and it would be selfish on my part to look the other way. There are bodies in the street and people getting paid leave and getting away with murder."

Abandoned by his birth parents, raised by white parents, with a career and money very few can enjoy... Yet he disrespects the country in which he was raised. Perhaps he'd be happier in another country somewhere?

They're all for freedom of expression, as long as you don't disagree with them.

I thought it was obvious that Kaepernick is not implying that he is unfortunate or oppressed, rather he is making a show of support for those who are. I guess even the obvious goes over some peoples heads.

Just like in that thread about Ice Cube. If he was showing support for Donald Trump, we'd hear about how great he is, but since he's not supporting him, he doesn't matter.

It's not that it's over their heads, speaking out about black issues makes people very angry. It still perplexes me as to why this upsets a bunch of folks that don't care either way.

I don’t think affluence should be used as a bribe to “keep quiet” or to abandon your right to speak out on an issue regardless of its merits. The NFL encourages standing for the anthem but it is not required.

Appreciation for one’s blessings can be shown in any of many ways like donations to charity, church attendance, prayer, public service, and so on. And there are many ways to peacefully protest. That's his choice.

If you disagree, so be it, you’re entitled.
