Hello everyone,

I have just submitted my AOS package and it arrived yesterday(Friday). Accidentally I stumbled upon Selective Service and some talk about having to register.

I'm currently 24 years, my i94 expires in November, and in October I will be 25. I'm on a k1 visa.

I read that people who are on k1 are not required to register, but once you apply for AOS we should register ?

So, to make it short, do i have to register now? I know the USCIS is suppose to do it automatically, but since i can do it online, i rather do it if I must.

Many thanks.

You are going to have to register anyway, so I would do it now.

My husband was automatically registered. We didn't even know about SS, and he received his registration confirmation a few weeks after receiving his GC. There's a good chance you may be automatically registered, if not, just go ahead and get it done.

Are you sure that I'm suppose to register after I get my GC ? Can anyone else confirm this ? From what I've read as soon as you enter on k1 you are no longer a non immigrant and are required to register.

I tried to do it online, but it wouldn't take my SSN, so I will do it by mail, if they deny it ok if not even better.

You're one of the lucky ones... or well read ones. A lot of immigrants don't realize that it's required and they end up having problems when trying to get their citizenship. It can also cause issues when going to get a job at places like the Postal Service. So just be sure that you make sure it gets done before your 26th birthday.

K-1 from Haiti - NOA1: 5/27/2014; NOA2: 7/8 USCIS never updated to say that it was sent to the NVC (just in case you're as concerned about your status not updating as I was about mine)

My son (K2) visa was warned about Selective Service during his K2 interview. As soon as he got his Social security number, he registered with Selective Service.
He had the same problem - the system "didn't recognize" his SS#, so son did it via regular mail.
Within a month or so he received a letter (confirmation about his registration) and card from them. Since then he can see his registration on line also. And no more problem with reading his SS#.
So do it right now. Good luck!!! :)

Thanks everyone. I'm doing it on Monday. It does says that there is a 30 day period from entering(on Monday it will be 33days), however, from what I've read, as long as you do it before you turn 26, and were required to, you will be fine.

I'm actually a lucky one, I just stumbled upon Selected Service while looking for employment with FBI, so I googled it. I read it in i-485 but ignored it thinking USCIS will take care of it.. :)

Haven't even gotten citizenship yet, and aiming high, but it's the way it is.

USCIS usually register you automatically when you submit an I-485 (the form says this near the end) but it's smart to do it yourself and get it out of the way.

Hopefully Selective Service will be abolished soon, with the recent changes to womens' more equal footing in the US military. It makes no sense for the federal government to perpetuate this sexist and discriminatory practice any longer.

Hi there, my husband was in the same boat but very close to the 26 year mark. We went to an open meeting with immigration officers. We were told from the officials that because a K-1 has the INTENT to immigrate that they need to register when they get to the USA. Even though the SS website says non-immigrants do not need to register USCIS has a different view because of the intent part.

I would do it now, as when you Naturalize it asks for the date that you registered, to avoid any issues, do it and not worry about it.

I would also not bank on being registered automatically.

Just a hint for anyone looking to get top clearance. It seems that having dual citizenship disqualifies you from getting such clearance. Even though they may ask you to hand in your passport and give a statement that you renounce your previous citizenship, which is disappointing and in a way discriminatory in my opinion. You are a naturalized citizen, but yet you are not treated like every other citizen. I understand the security concerns, but it is discriminatory, because in the future my children will be born U.S. citizens and they will be treated like this because they will automatically have dual citizenship through their father.

Thanks to everyone for all suggestions, just wanted you to know this unless they change it.
