Less than one week after Paul Manafort resigned as campaign chairman amid mounting evidence of unsavory connections to pro-Russian groups, and Trump hired Breitbart News executive and alleged domestic abuser Stephen Bannon, another allegedly disreputable operative is joining the G.O.P. nominees increasingly motley crew: Bill Stepien, a former aide to Chris Christie during the New Jersey governors Bridgegate scandal.

On Thursday, Stepien was appointed to serve as Trumps national field director, NBC News reports, citing sources close to the campaign. The latest in a slew of new hires, Stepien managed Christies 2009 and 2013 gubernatorial re-election campaigns before he was fired in January of 2014 for his role in the 2013 George Washington Bridge lane-closure scandal. Bannon is reportedly credited with tapping the ex-Christie aide, along with the G.O.P. nominees son-in-law, Jared Kushner. Christie, who is heading up Trumps White House transition team, was uninvolved in the decision, The New York Times reports.
