Hi. My fiance will be interviewing for his K1 visa in Montreal in a couple of weeks. We have been prepared for this for a long time and have all our documents together including the I-134 with my income being sufficient. Unfortunately, I lost my job today and I am quite confident in being able to get another one in the next coming weeks but I'm fear it won't pay nearly as much.

I understand that I need to fill out most of the forms again if and when I take the new job since my employment will have changed.

However, I want to ask one of my parents to be a cosponsor (as insurance). Is this possible? I did a search through the VJ forums and have read that Montreal does accept cosponsors. But my concern is that this whole time, I was the sole petitioner with no indication of having a cosponsor. Is getting a cosponsor as simple as having them fill out an I-134 of their own with support documents and bringing it with me to his interview in addition to all my updated documents?

Is there anything else I need to do or be potentially aware of?

Better use a sponsor in this case because if you do get another job there will be not much to show besides a job offer and a few pay checks, they might want to see stability.

To have a sponsor is just to get them to fill the i134, proof of residence or citizenship, supporting documents such as tax transcripts, recent pay checks, letter from employer, etc

Good luck

Ok thanks for the info. So even though we filled out the DS 160 online and have no indication of having a cosponsor, all I have to do is to have one of my parents fill out an I-134 with supporting documents and that's it? Sorry if it seems like it's the same question. It's just that I remember somewhere asking me if there was a cosponsor and I can't remember what form.

That's it for the sponsor.

The question in the ds160 is if anyone's sponsoring your trip, if you want the answer changed you can ask the embassy to open up the form again for you.

You mentioned filling out the ds160 and had no mention of co sponsor there. So I said the only question they have there (that could be any indication of support) is person paying for your trip (in this case is the trip to the USA). See http://www.visajourney.com/examples/DS-160-Example-Form.pdf page 3.

I don't think the ds160 needs any indication of sponsor or anything like that. For the interview, take your documents plus docs from the sponsor and you're good to go

As p-ana said, you didn't have to "declare" any sort of joint sponsor at any stage in the process. If you want a joint sponsor, you just bring their complete I-134 with the necessary supporting docs to the interview.

We used a joint sponsor for my husband (when he was interviewing for his K-1) as I am a student, and he also checked that he would be paying for his trip himself, because, well, he did. :) That question I think is more relevant for tourist visas, which fill out the same form, than for the K-1.
