I picked Detroit on July 29 and it was horrible. From the stories I read here, it seemed to go really smooth and fast there but with a 2hr45mn layover - I barely caught my flight. I stood in line for about 1,5 - 2hr because there were just five CBP officers for the visa holders. Plus, the CBP officer I walked to didn't know how K1 worked which took even longer.

However, with 4hrs, you should be good.

Thanks for sharing your experience??. I will choose long layover time so i won't miss my next flight.

Atlanta 4 and over is plenty

if you have to change airlines, get luggage at checked in bag site and take to next airlines to recheck

if keeping the same airlines all you have to do is go thru customs and immigraiton with your carry on bags

new international terminal there but not hard to get around

same with Chicago and JFK

no nothing of Detroit but any airport should be ok for 4 hour changes

I think the point you have here is either choice would work with a 4+ hour layover. It really depends on your own choice or overall cost as both have their merits. I would choose Detroit as I know that airport much better, but have been through Atlanta as well. You have to ask yourself if you would rather get off a plane an hour and a half earlier to do your POE, stretch your legs, and relax a bit then take the 2-3 hour flight to Tampa, or wait until Atlanta to do this then face a one hour or so flight to Tampa. Depending on your departure airport, both are basically in the same flight path if your flight takes a polar route.

Good Luck and Safe Travels!

I came through Detroit (DTW). Arrived at 5 PM and it was just one international flight at that hour so it went really smooth. I had to go to secondary, but it only took me 10 minutes there. From the moment I got out of the plane and the moment I left the airport it only passed 40 minutes, but this can vary. I would choose Detroit. I know Atlanta is one of the busiest airport in the world and it's huge.

Yes! Atlanta is the busiest airport in the world but there has been major changes in Atlanta airport during the past years. There are two separate airports for domestic and international flights.

The domestic airport is crazy busy. But the international airport is fine. I didnt had issues with the immigrations in the past. Had entered US via Atlanta 3times since 2014, it was pretty quick.

My last Atlanta entry from Philippines was December 2015, they had the kiosks for B1/B2 visas. There is a separate queue for those entering with B1/B2 and hence minimizing the number of people on queue on the regular line.

I think 4hours and 20minutes should be fine.
