The extension letter is just that. It extends the expiration of the card for a year. There should not be an issue. He is a lawful permanent resident.

Shouldn't matter. We bought a house while I was a conditional resident. Makes no difference.

The mortgage (if you're doing that) may be more of an issue, but not because of his status but because new immigrants generally have no credit history.

You do not even need to be a citizen or a resident to buy a house in the US. Foreigners buy houses all the time. It's not a problem whatsoever. Thus being a permanent resident with an expired green card is not a problem either.

It's possible that he might need valid ID during closing so that the notary can make sure that it's really him and the expired green card won't work due to being expired - you can use the foreign passport for that if he doesn't have any other non-expired ID, or a state ID or driver's license.

If the husband is on the mortgage application, then the bank might want to see some proof of status (to make sure he doesn't disappear without a trace without paying them back).

What would I be able to show them? His green card expired in May 2016. We did biometrics in May 2016. We are at closing now with the title company and they have asked for an updated copy of the permanent resident card. We do not have this yet. And probably won't get it until next year since it takes forever to get them.

The green card and extension letter both together, same as you would for travel purposes.
