When I first came to small-town Virginia (our town has a pop. of 183 NO LIE) to marry my man and live on a farm in the middle of the Blue Ridge Mountains, it was gonna be quite the culture shock for a big-city gal like me who lived in Montreal (pop. about 3 MILLION...lol) all my life, that went without saying. :blink:

Hubby ran/runs a cattle farm, and it was really difficult for me at first, being an animal lover and having to care for these bovines who'd look me straight in the eyes when a bit down the road they would end up on my plate beside the mashed potatoes. :unsure:

Well...that was 3 and a half years ago. Today we went and picked up our side of beef to put in our freezer for the next year and this is what hubby found me doing in the kitchen just a half hour ago. :hehe: Anyone care to guess what colors the steer was that I'd been feeding in the barn 2 weeks ago? :whistle:

P.S. Excuse my wild hair, I just had it pulled back in a clip...lol.

Well, yeeehaaawww! :lol:

That's actually a fairly good-sized town compared to some in rural California, such as Tom's Place (77) and Harmony (18) :P

My guess is that it was a nice white and black holstein (sp?) pattern.

I'm from rural Maine...we have a deep appreciation for how large cows tongues are...they can lick you from about a foot or two away. Heck, they can pick their own noses.

It's amazing what we can make peace with when it tastes so good with mashed potatoes!
