What happens if the beneficiary requests an interpreter at the interview?

Hello everyone,

I was wondering if I can get multiple opinions from readers about this issue.

What happens if the beneficiary speaks very little english and if used, he/she would lack the confidence of answering questions that may determine many vital issues in his/her life in such an important interview? Would the embassy usually provide an interpreter? Maybe they would have an interviewer who is able to communicate with the country's language (where the embassy is located)? Is that taken against the beneficiary in any way?

Learning to answer all the questions with limited english word content is very challenging in such a short period of time and is not a good option. It is known that the questions are short and easy, still they are important enough to raise this issue!

Please note that both the beneficiary and the petitioner communicate using their native language (which is a common language). The petitioner speaks fluent english and we are hoping that the beneficiary would pick up the language fairly quickly when they come to live in the US. They don't allow the petitioner in the interview along with the beneficiary.

My husband had his interview in Arabic. No issues. As long as you and your fiance/ee have a common language and they don't think you and your fiance/ee have a language barrier you are fine.

Our interview was in our language not in inglish at all since my fiancé don't speak english, we were approved so I'm sure it won't be a issued since the couple speak the same language.

I, like others, think this is not a problem. The embassies have people there for just that purpose. I wouldn't worry. As for picking up English quickly, many local high schools have adult community schools attached that teach English as a Second Language. Joan got here on a Thursday and was in school on Monday! Better than sitting around the house waiting for the EAD! Good Luck!

I agree with the above responses. When Katya had her K1 interview, she chose to do it in English since she is very proficient in the language, but others also being interviewed at the same time did it in Russian. The consulates are adapt with the local language(s). Also, as Stevephoto mentioned, there are many ESL programs out there through community secondary education and community colleges, I would look them up prior to your fiancee's arrival.

My fiancee was uncomfortable doing her interview in English so she had a Tagalog interpreter. There was no problem. She got approved rather easily today.
