Change of status from J-1 to F-1

Hello!

Have anyone changed their status from J-1 (au pair) to F-1. I know someone who wants to leave the program and change status for F-1, stay in the US for a couple of months and study. I've heard that it's hard to get the approval now. Anyone tried to do it this year? Did you get the change of status approved? How does it look like now?
