My husband went to London today and had his medical. They had his NHS records showing in the past he had a bout of depression after a job loss and financial problems and suicide thoughts. He isn't even on antidepressants now and the Dr told him he would never be approved at the interview! That is is useless to even go to the appointment at the embassy!!!

Not true. The doctor's being a jerk.

What IS true, as others have said, is that (1) psychological issues/conditions can bar you from a visa; (2) if you have a history of any psychological issues severe enough to be documented, then you MUST have sought and successfully maintained treatment or have "proof" that the issue has abated (e.g. situational depression).

Proof of either of these can come in the form of a letter from your GP (or whatever doctor diagnosed/treated the illness), but as someone else said, MUST make clear that you are not a threat to yourself or others.

If I were you, I would do the following:

1. Go hurry and get that letter NOW

2. Request a second medical appointment by calling Knightsbridge and asking them not to send the medical report YET until you can bring the missing letter

3. Carry a copy of that letter to the interview so that you can present it to the Consular Officer, and explain that this letter wasn't seen at the original medical appointment, but that it is current, valid, signed by his GP, etc.

File the lawsuit against this doctor! he has definitely added some stress to the very stressful and complicated immigration process plus he has spread kind of false information. of course i am joking about "lawsuit" BUT please, don't listen to him. He is not the one who makes the decision about the visa for your husband.

05-06-2008 = Better $12 call to English-speaker; "joint" interview date 6/30/08 (my selection).

06-30-2008 = Stokes Interrogations w/Ecuadorian (not USC); "wait 2 weeks; we'll mail her."

Hi, I will pretty much reiterate that the doctor does not have any authority over the visa process. While his opinion may very well be honest, the embassy is the only authority to have any say I this matter.

Now having a serious mental illness is typically a medical condition that can cause the visa go be rejected, like someone said that as long as he can produce a letter from preferably a psychiatrist stating his mental illness is well controlled and perhaps also indicate any medications he may be on.

This type of letter should help establish that he is not a threat to himself or society.

So don't be discouraged by what the doctor said.

I personally think the embassy will defer to the expertise of a medical professional and not try to determine mental illness or not at an interview. Probably best to take it up again with Knightsbridge clinic. It was a bad idea to turn over incriminating medical files but no statement attesting to fine now.

He took them because he checked yes on the checklist.

The checklist https://uk.usembassy.gov/wp-content/uploads/sites/16/2016/08/IV018a-IV-medical-letter-Aug-2016.pdf does not say bring your records. Exact photocopies of records are never asked for. If there is a serious reported condition, Knightsbridge clinic will ask that their doctor write a short report explaining it and the prognosis.
