Police record from Japan and expiration of NOA-2

Dear all,

My fiance' (US citizen) and myself (Italian living in Germany) have started the process for obtaining a K-1 visa last April. Everything was going smoothly, until I have realized that I require police records from the countries where I've lived for more than one year from the age of 16. One of these countries is Japan and when I spoke to the consulate to get information on how to obtain one, they told me it takes two to three months to receive it! This means that potentially I could receive it after the expiration of the validity of my NOA-2...if this were to be the case, what would happen? Would I have to start the petition all over again? Or can the NOA-2 be extended by the consulate?

Alternatively can I go ahead and provide the US Consulate in Frankfurt with all the documents I have available and later the Japanese police record?

Many thanks in advance for your help on this!

Cristian

The approval is valid for 1 year, just make sure your embassy extends it automatically after the first 4 months are up.

You can easily verify it by calling or emailing the American embassy in the country where you will have your interview.

Japan Police Record is 10 days but that is if you show up in person and have proof of your case. Requesting remotely is probably what the consulate said. Months. Maybe you need to contact Tokyo Police directly and find out what they require to send you.

Hello rcripps, thank you for your reply. I am not sure what you mean by contacting the Tokyo Police to find out what they require to send me...can you please explain further?

In addition, the japanese consulate told me that the police record arrived in a sealed envelope and cannot be open otherwise it will not be valid. Now my question is: in what language is the japanese police record written? How can you make a copy of it if the envelope is sealed?

Thanks!

Thank you so much about this! The websites list useful information even though my problem is that I can only request the certificate outside of Japan and it seems it will take 2-3 months...

Thank you so much, I Knew this website and that's where I found out at first that I woudl need 2-3 months to get the certificate. I spoke to three Japanese consulates and they all confirmed the same...

It would be great to have in writing from the US authorities whether the NOA2 can be extended....

I don't have anything in writing but my experience is that they will extend it every 4 months for a total of 1 year. If you do not complete the interview by then, then the application dies. At this point trust is your only option.

They extend application in the Philippines all the time because many Filipinos have TB and must go through a regiment to be cured before they are allowed to interview and enter the US. So it does happen.

Our NOA2 showed an expiration of August 14 but it was not possible for us both to get to Rio de Janeiro by that time. I have heard that extension is automatic, but I wanted the reassurance of having it in writing, too.

I emailed the embassy in Rio de Janeiro explaining delays in Brazilian passport processing as well as the limited appointment availability due to the Olympics and specifically requested an extension of the expiration. They replied within 48 hours stating that the expiration had been extended from August 14 to December 13. They will extend in 4-month increments up to one year.

Write (email) the embassy.

The Japanese police certificate is written in five languages: Japanese, English, French and two others, possibly Spanish and German. I don't remember because the important thing is that it is written in English.

You can't make a copy. The US embassy will have encountered these before, so I wouldn't worry too much.

Thank you so much all of you for your advice and guidance! I have written to the US embassy in Frankfurt and they mentioned that if the NOA2 expires before the visa interview, they need a signed statement (original) from my fiancée stating that she still wishes to marry me in order to extend it.

Now, do you think I should wait until I receive the Japanese police record to send to the embassy the documents listed on the checklist or should I go ahead and send what I have in order to gain some time?
