I think people have a responsibility to not build in flood Plains. FEMA actually enables that. Another perfect example of govt making things worse

But think about what that means for a second. Are you suggesting no one build along the Mississippi? How about the Colorado? The Susquehanna? That eliminates a great deal of acreage in terms of states. Do you think we should have never put up any dams or levees anywhere then (that would eliminate even more states counties ect)? No coastal or seaside towns? How far inland and away from water should one be? Flood plains constantly change, and are getting progressively more advanced as the years go by. New flood plains and flood events can even be created (as described) by over-developing areas and draining severe runoff downstream. The natural mechanisms that once helped protect Florida and Louisiana in terms of forestation and everglades are waning over time.

Being proactive and repairing what is severely lacking actually saves money in the long run. You wouldn't have to complain about FEMA so much if there were not a lot of events for them to handle. Even with proper infrastructure in place there will still be events, but I believe they will be less, and we'd be greater prepared for events further in-land as well.

Maintaining infrastructure is an important part of our society and the founders understood that developing and safeguarding these were one of the essential functions of government (rather than a lot of the wasteful things a lot of republicans tend to complain about that I do agree with).

What if your 100 year old town floods and everything is destroyed? Perhaps you built a house in an area that previously never flooded? In Louisiana properties that had never been at risk from flooding before, have suddenly be inundated with water, and your solution is to tell those people to take a running jump for themselves.

The government should require that anyone who lives within a certain distance from any body of water should tether an Ark to the side of the house, si man. Failure to comply will be punishable by fine, $i man.

However, the government will NOT protect anyone against HOA wrath for violating deed restrictions, no man.

06-04-2007 = TSC stamps postal return-receipt for I-129f.

06-11-2007 = NOA1 date (unknown to me).

07-20-2007 = Phoned Immigration Officer; got WAC#; where's NOA1?

09-25-2007 = Touch (first-ever).

09-28-2007 = NOA1, 23 days after their 45-day promise to send it (grrrr).

10-20 & 11-14-2007 = Phoned ImmOffs; "still pending."

12-11-2007 = 180 days; file is "between workstations, may be early Jan."; touches 12/11 & 12/12.

12-18-2007 = Call; file is with Division 9 ofcr. (bckgrnd check); e-prompt to shake it; touch.

12-19-2007 = NOA2 by e-mail & web, dated 12-18-07 (187 days; 201 per VJ); in mail 12/24/07.

01-09-2008 = File from USCIS to NVC, 1-4-08; NVC creates file, 1/15/08; to consulate 1/16/08.

01-23-2008 = Consulate gets file; outdated Packet 4 mailed to fiancee 1/27/08; rec'd 3/3/08.

04-29-2008 = Fiancee's 4-min. consular interview, 8:30 a.m.; much evidence brought but not allowed to be presented (consul: "More proof! Second interview! Bring your fiance!").

05-05-2008 = Infuriating $12 call to non-English-speaking consulate appointment-setter.

05-06-2008 = Better $12 call to English-speaker; "joint" interview date 6/30/08 (my selection).

06-30-2008 = Stokes Interrogations w/Ecuadorian (not USC); "wait 2 weeks; we'll mail her."

07-2008 = Daily calls to DOS: "currently processing"; 8/05 = Phoned consulate, got Section Chief; wrote him.

08-07-08 = E-mail from consulate, promising to issue visa "as soon as we get her passport" (on 8/12, per DHL).

08-27-08 = Phoned consulate (they "couldn't find" our file); visa DHL'd 8/28; in hand 9/1; through POE on 10/9 with NO hassles(!).

My solution is to tell them to have Insurance, but I don't think Govt should subsidize people to live in flood areas. Its welfare for the rich

Build a 3 mil home on the beach. Govt subsidized insurance. Hurricane hits and the Govt insurance pays for it.

Folks with million dollar homes aren't the only beneficiaries. I know you have a predilection for missing the point, but come on, try and get beyond fox news talking points.

Here is the problem, John goes hunting and fishing with his buds and builds a camp on the river. Decides to throw up a shack to be a bit more comfortable, it gets grandfathered and remodeled...yada yada his Grand kids build a two story home and have an expectation that the Feds will back them up. In the mean time the Army Corp decides to respond to political pressure and protect the farmers upstream and the shipping downstream with channels and dikes to keep the river on the straight and narrow. Back on the river schools and roads are built, the quaint riverside town has the best ice cream , gift shops and microbreweries until the rains hit.

Governor and the President declare a disaster area , insurance pays half, the Fed pick up the tab. The houses and microbreweries are rebuilt better than ever.

Rain, Rinse and Repeat

So here is where the Socialism kicks in: Someone on a state and regional level needs to tell foks we are not going to build roads and schools. Someone at the Fed level needs to say not to congressional lobbying on the levees. AND with global warming this inland storms and floods are going to hit us worse.

Decide where your wetlands are, cash the folks out...let the wetlands stay wild
