Hi everyone,

Over a year ago now my wife and I successfully completed the K1 Visa and she has had her Greencard since early this year. However, there is a reason I put this in the K1 forum, because I think others might know from experience how to answer my question.

So, my wife wants to travel back to her country, Vietnam, to visit family next year. This is when I realized that while she has all the right US documents, her Vietnamese passport has her maiden name on it. So the problem is that, in order to get into Vietnam, her name on her plane ticket would have to match her Vietnamese Passport name. But, in order to return to the USA, her ticket would have to match her USA documents, which have her married name.

I am not sure of my options. Do we have to change her name on the Vietnam Passport? and does that mean contacting the Vietnamese Consulate?

Thanks in advanced!

Joel

This is a topic covered many times in this part of vj

http://www.visajourney.com/forums/forum/115-working-traveling-during-us-immigration/

There's no need to get a new passport if hers is still valid. She needs to book tickets in her passport name, to get back in the USA, she'll present her green card and if asked her marriage certificate, so to prove her name change and her married name printed on the green card.

As an add-on to this question. I heard that it is possible to combine the maiden name and the married name. So something like: FirstName MaidenName MarriedName. Supposedly the countries passport that has the maiden name will be happy and the USA customs will be happy because of the married name. Any opinions on this?

Her married name will depend on what she chose it to be. If she wished to hyphenate her maiden name to your last name, she can do that. If tickets are bought in a name different from the travel document (passport) most likely she won't be able to travel. To get her married name on her green card, the forms should be filled with accordingly.

My fiance came in May and we got married last 2 weeks ago. We want to go New York because there's a family thing going on. His passport expires on November. Can be take an air plane to new york still using that passport? We just sent out the forms for his permanent residents

he can go wherever he feels like inside the country, as long as he has a valid ID (passport, in his case) airlines will let him through.
