A bunch of jocks in a poor country decided to act up. It's a poor, dark country. Crime is well known. And Lochte is a gold medal winner. Who are you going to believe initially?

Brazilian authorities have confirmed that Ryan Lochte lied about being robbed at gunpoint early Sunday, and police have recommended he and teammate James Feigen be indicted for the false reporting of a crime.

The news of possible charges against Lochte, which must be decided by a prosecutor, came after a dramatic press conference on Thursday afternoon in which Police Inspector Alexandre Braga said:

Ryan Lochte, Jimmy Feigen, Gunnar Bentz and Jack Conger were not robbed and were not the victims of a crime at a gas station in Barra da Tijuca shortly after 6am on Sunday

The men were seen on video camera urinating on a wall and then causing destruction and vandalism to the bathroom at the establishment

There was then a clash between the group and employees, which Bentz or Conger told authorities on Thursday was led by a 'highly intoxicated' Lochte, something other witnesses confirmed

Their cab driver was told by employees to not leave and that police were being called to the scene, at which point two of the men began to walk away and a security guard pulled his gun telling them to stay

The men eventually paid employees at the gas station $20 and 100 reais (approximately $30) and were allowed to leave the scene

Police have spoken to Bentz and Conger as well as Lochte on the phone and they will be speaking to Feigen later in the day on Thursday, the FBI ha also said they are willing to work with Brazilian authorities

The men were with two women whose identities are unknown and police believe this may have been their motive in hiding what happened since they could have girlfriends

The judge who allowed the swimmers to be held for questioning will determine when they can leave the country, but as far as police are concerned Bentz and Conger are free to go

Maybe he was thinking about the socialist paradise Venezuela. I think only the president has electricity there.

As to Brazil, yes, they are currently in an economic downturn much like Russia, but I have worked with many engineers down there, and I wouldn't consider the whole country poor.

Two U.S. Olympic swimmers flew home from Brazil on Thursday after a local crowd jeered them, calling them "liars" and "fakes", and police accused them of fabricating a story about being robbed at gunpoint during the Rio Games.

Their departure marked what the U.S. Olympic team hopes will be the closing stages of an incident that has embarrassed the host city, angered the police and government, unleashed a storm on social media, and dominated news coverage of South America's first Olympics.

The U.S. Olympic Committee (USOC) issued an apology after the departure of Gunnar Bentz and Jack Conger, who were among four U.S. swimmers shown to have lied about being stopped by gunmen posing as police in the early hours of Sunday.

"We apologize to our hosts in Rio and the people of Brazil for this distracting ordeal in the midst of what should rightly be a celebration of excellence," USOC chief Scott Blackmun said in a statement.

As an Ozzie I'm not crazy at my country's showing in the Olympic pool so I feel like gloating about this saga...

I watched Lochte's interview on NBC and he still didn't really apologise 4 his actions and deserting his fellow athletes along the way... Somehow wanted sympathy 4 the 1 night if indiscretion (what about the following week of lies then m8?)

Made it into an international incident when it was blokes letting of steam acting up like fools. I noticed he didnt offer to reimburse the guy who paid 11,000 to get his passport back.

The way to ingratiate yourself back to the American public would be to at least double that "donation" to the charity in Brazil.

I hope our Australian boys see this as a lesson..... But first they need to get on to the podium before going out to celebrate!
