Thanks heaps!!! That is what I had always supposed.

Had to laugh at the 'don't over-think it' comment....VJ could start up a stand alone 'Over-thinkers Anonomous' group and there would be a waiting list.....??

Best wishes All...

As an add-on to this question. I heard that it is possible to combine the maiden name and the married name. So something like: FirstName MaidenName MarriedName. Supposedly the countries passport that has the maiden name will be happy and the USA customs will be happy because of the married name. Any opinions on this?

First, see post #16 above. Second, most passports that I have seen have a place for GIVEN name and one for SURNAME. Which name are you going to put in the SURNAME spot? The SURNAME on the passport and the ticket MUST match. It is not an issue with the countries involved. It is an issue with the mode of travel--i.e. boarding an aircraft or ship as each country has made them the responsible party to ensure that the person travelling will be admitted to that country otherwise the company will be responsible for returning them to the point departure.

The easiest solution is for the woman to keep her original surname. Why is it customary for the woman to change her last name? Why not have the husband change his last name?

I think what Joel M was meaning was to hyphenate your maiden name with your married name such as Robinson-Smith, passports will allow for this.

It is customary for the woman to change her last name however many women now days do choose to keep their maiden names or use a combination of both, there is no rule to say a woman must take the husbands name, it comes down to personal choice. :)
