I actually like Brazil a lot and am glad they are hosting these Olympics. I work with many Brazilian engineers mostly from San Paulo, and it is definitely not a third world country. Now if they can get rid of that pesky socialism, they might really thrive!

Our democracy is relatively young. We were under military dictatorship until 1985, only got our Constitution in 1988, only 2 years before I was born haha

So time itself will make things better for us. Our big and somewhat interventionist State is the result of 20 years without democracy and a lot of outdated laws, plus the country being run by people who were born and raised in dictatorships.

But we do have potential! We have natural resources, we have money, we have an amazing people, a well educated generation waiting to take over and a recent yet strong desire to improve our country!

Visit if you can, you'll love it here, specially during sports events, which we are very passionate about.

College football isn't a "global" sport but hey ur missing the point but me thinks you're messing about.

Actually if you visited the UK and spent time with anyone with a decent sports package you could watch quite a lot of the college football games (Big 10, PAC 12, SEC so not filler games) and college game day too.

Not only that but MLB,NBA & NFL. Again non of these are global in nature but at least you can watch them.

I luckily am able to catch the Englidh Premier League games... Whoooo hoooo

You see some of us can appreciate a variety of sports including American specific ones.

I agree with your observation. I haven't been to the US yet, but I get the feeling that the american media can be really self-centered.

And I love the EPL! We get the games here in Brazil, and pretty much the whole country was cheering for the amazing Leicester City last season! What a brilliant title!

As a Brazilian, I just ask for you guys to not believe all the negative coverage the american press is giving us here. Brazil is not a third world country, a war zone or a biohazard area. Zika virus is not worse than a regular cold and people don't die here because of pollution.

I hope you're right. Some people claim that Brazil could well be taken over by the military in very near future. The recent impeachment of the Brazilian president, by a corrupt legislature, aren't exactly grounds for optimism in my humble opinion.

What? Who said that about the military? This was never considered a possibility here, we're way past this point in our history.

Corruption is a problem here because, like I said, we have a democracy being run by the same people that made politics during the dictatorship. The State is too big, there's too much bureaucracy and laws are outdated in many ways.

The impeachment was an international shame, I won't deny it. But there wasn't and there won't be no violence or military intervention. By the way, the process is still under way and it can be reversed.

Brazil is a lot like United States, but with a younger democracy. It's not nearly as bad or undeveloped like some people believe, I assure you that.

I'm sure Brazil is a nice place. However, it's sort of incorrect to say that Zika is not worse than a cold. Yes, in most cases people will not show symptoms at all or will show symptoms that are of mild illness. That does not mean it is no worse than a cold, because it's lasting effects on the body linger in ways we don't fully understand. Colds don't linger in the body to the point they are sexually transmitted nearly a year after the fact, nor do they cause devastating birth defects leading to high infant mortality.

Colds don't linger in the body to the point they are sexually transmitted nearly a year after the fact, nor do they cause devastating birth defects leading to high infant mortality.

There's a lot of misinformation regarding the Zika Virus.

First, specialists are not sure how much time it stays in the body, but it's not even close to 1 year. It is between 2 and 6 months, at the most.

Second, the microcephaly incidents occurred in 1% of the population infected, mostly in a very poor region of the country. This condition related to Zika was never observed anywhere else in the world, so many people believe that the government is hiding something from us.

About 2 years ago, there was an experiment here in Brazil, supported by the UN, in which genetically modified mosquitoes, created to be sterile, were released to lower the population of mosquitoes that carries Dengue(which is a lot worse that Zika), Chikunguyia and Zika. I know it sounds like conspiracy theory, but it was actually advertised by the government itself as a big advancement and I can show you articles from credible sources if you like. Anyway, there are speculation that the unusual behaviour of the Zika Virus here is related to that.

When it comes to the so called "outbreak", it's actually limited to one specific area of the country with a few random cases in other regions, and it won't affect the Olympics at all because it's winter here right now and these mosquitoes disappear during this time of the year.

I read articles on CNN that make Zika look like an Ebola or something and that it's spreading like wildfire all over Brazil, but the truth is that it's not that bad. If much, pregnant women should stay away from the northeast part of Brazil right now.

And to make a comparison, the West Nile Virus that exists in the US and is also transmitted by a mosquito is a lot worse than Zika.
