Frustrated! Police Character certificate issue

 Share

I sent NVC a police certificate that I obtained in March 2016 and it expired in June 2016. The Nigerian police report is only good for 3 months. (Useless).

The only issue here is that I don't live in Nigeria. I left Nigeria since 2014 and that certificate is the most recent.

So I called NVC to check case status and as usual they told me the same rap "your documents could take up to 6 weeks to be reviewed."

Upon asking the rep, she told me that the police certificate needs to be current during case review.

I'm scared we might get another checklist, and I can't fly to Nigeria for a new police report. I don't live there anymore! Flight is expensive and pointless to obtain a report. My fingerprint is required.

Why is NVC process so frustrating?

If it's unavailable from outside the country you shouldn't need it. Korea won't issue certs to those not in country so USCIS doesn't require it unless the person is currently in Korea.

Have you asked them specifically about this?

It's no issue you are fine. It's good for a year. That 3 months validity doesn't apply. Your good.

No I'm from applying to travel to the US. Not Korea.

You obviously misunderstood what I was saying. I was saying Korea won't give certs to people outside the country so USCIS doesn't require them from Korea. The same is probably true for Nigeria.

Then I was asking if you've asked them about that?

Why is NVC process frustrating? I don't see why it's frustrating when they are doing their job. They usually take 4-6 weeks to review documents for everyone not only you, that's their typical processing time. Just wait till you hear from them. Typically for NVC or embassy, police certificates are vaild up to a year from the issue date, so NVC will likely be OK with your PC regardless if the expiry date mentioned.

Let NVC do their job first. You will hear soon from NVC if your case is completed.

If all you read was that "NVC is frustrating", well thanks for your response. Everyone who's gone through NVC can agree with me. It's not an easy road. So thank you for reminding me to allow them do their job, like I have a choice.

It's no issue you are fine. It's good for a year. That 3 months validity doesn't apply. Your good.

Thank you! I will keep my fingers crossed on this.

You don't need to be in in Nigeria to get a police report. You can download the forms make your own fingerprints and post it to the embassy. It is doable. But like you said its valid for 3months.

I wish it was as easy as you said. It doesn't work like that in Nigeria. You gotta grease some hands to make things happen and it would take more than a month to actually get it. Best bet, you travel to Nigeria for it.

But anyway I've been reading that the certificate is good for 1 yr even though it said 3 months on it, as long as I haven't been to Nigeria since I got it. Or so I would think...

And it's not fake, you just download the forms make your fingerprints yourself, send it to the police department and they will sign it and post it back to your address. The catch is you have to send someone to Alagbon to pick it up for you. It's very simple. Trust me.

I know man Nigerians having no issues ordering online and having family or friend pick up the original that you will need for interview. The 3 months is for submission to NVC if they get within that 3 months you are good for a 1 year. For immigration purposes the PCC is good for 1 year.

Keep us posted.

Did you have one before that expired before ordering another? Because mine was issued in March 2016 and "expired" in May 2016.

You can get the link on google if you want. I can give you a direct contact of a police department that will get it done for you in 2 days and will get you through the whole process but you have to get someone to pick it up and mail it to you.

  • 2 weeks later...

Update: so while waiting for my case to be reviewed, I called NVC to check status today and I got a very nice and confident rep on the phone who answered my questions.

He told me that police character reports are good for one year from the day you got it from your country, regardless of what the expiration date on it said. He adviced I wait for the case review.

I will take his words for it until I hear about my case. Fingers crossed!
