Hello,

My wife and I got married today. About a week ago, we received her social security card with her maiden name on it. Now that we're married, she wants to take my name.

We went back to the Social Security Administration today, but they said they cannot change her name on the SSN card because then it wouldn't match her name on the I94. They said to 'call immigration', but I can't figure out what to do.

Any ideas about how she can change her name first with USCIS?

Thanks,

-John

The ssa officers are known to be difficult people. There's no need to call anyone, they should be able to do the name change if you show the marriage certificate.

You can try and go to another office, taking the necessary documents plus the marriage certificate to try and change her name.

If they don't want to, your best bet will be when she gets her ead or green card. Don't forget to use her married name on her aos papers so the ead and gc will be in her married name.

She changes her name with USCIS by filing the AOS/EAD/AP using her married name. Only once she has received her EAD or GC in her married name will SSA issue her a card with her new name.
