Where to 'register' after moving to the US?

I am approaching the end of the K1-visa application. Interview at the consulate in 3 weeks. So I am taking care of all kind of practical things.

I was wondering how the civic registration works in the US.

In the Netherlands you go to City hall when you move to register your new address. How does this work in the US?

And when are you an 'official resident'? Only after you receive the greencard? Or when I enter on the K1-visa?

Hope someone can help me! :-)

***** Moving from K1 to AOS from Family Visa for more answers *****

You don't really register your address, though you will need to let USCIS know if you move

You are legal, but not a permanent resident until your AOS is approved, this will take many months,

We don't have such a thing as "registering." You can ask the post office to forward your mail for one year, but it won't work for international stuff for now.

AOS for my husband
8/17/10: INTERVIEW DAY (day 123) APPROVED!!

ROC:
5/23/12: Sent out package
2/06/13: APPROVED!

After you marry, you can apply for SS card number and driving licence

if you do not drive, the DMV (department of motor vehicles ) will issue photo ID instead of driving licence

this is proof of ID and address

no national ID here

They can apply for an SSN now. They do not have to wait until they are married.

Print out your I-94 info > https://i94.cbp.dhs.gov/I94/request.html

Follow this guide for getting the SSN > http://www.visajourney.com/content/ssn

Follow this guide for AOS > http://www.visajourney.com/content/k1k3aos

The fees are listed here > http://www.uscis.gov/i-485

The fees for the I-765(EAD-work authorization) and I-131(AP-advance parole for travel) are waived when filed with a pending I-485, so include both of those too. It takes about 60-90 days to receive the EAD/AP combo card, which will allow you to work(along with an SSN) and re-enter the US when traveling abroad while waiting for the green card approval.

You need all the supporting documents for each form as well, so read the instructions for each one. You can also search here on VJ for what to include with each form if you get stumped. There are also example forms here on VJ you can look at when filling out the forms. They can be helpful.

And here are the details you need about whether or not you need to see a civil surgeon > http://www.visajourney.com/forums/topic/551080-immunizations-ds-3025-or-i-693/

Very helpful info! I read in the SSN guide that I can apply for the SSN about two weeks after entering the US. I didn't enter yet (planning late September).

You can get a social security number almost as soon as you arrive. You no longer need to wait two weeks.

My fiancé entered at POE on Wednesday afternoon and we applied for his SSN on Friday morning, no problem.

In most states it's almost pointless to get a driver's license before you have an EAD. You can usually get one with your I-94 as long as you have a certain amount of time remaining on it, but it will expire on the same day as I-94. Because you have to pay each time you get a new one, it's probably better to just wait until you have your EAD.
