Filing tax with lawyer or without

My husband have issues with his taxes but we are now ready to deal with the IRS. I just want to have an idea if its best to get a lawyer or can we just research on how to do it and deal with IRS without a lawyer. We did our visa application without a lawyer and it was easy for me.. Im just wondering if its the same with taxes or IRS.

Depends what the problem is. If it is just a matter of he didn't file when he was required an attorney may be able to get the penalties reduced. If it is a matter of fraud he will need an attorney. The IRS does not mess around and they want their money. If you lied to them you could face jail time.

It all depends on the severity of the issue(s). A lawyer will be much more expensive than say an EA (enrolled agent) or CPA who specializes in tax accounting and has the background.

I will agree though, if you have to deal with the IRS in say an in-person audit or something similar, you should hire someone with the tax background to help you and not go at it alone.
