I'm about to apply for a green card through my step-father. My situation is kind of weird so before I file the forms I'm just making sure I'll be totally eligible to apply.

My mother married a US citizen when I was 13 or 14 years old, I'm 20 and wish to live and work in the US. I'm in the US currently as a visitor since May 2016, staying with my boyfriend. My mother lived in the US for almost 3 years, her and my step father are still legally married but my mother has moved back to Canada and she's been living there for going on 4 years. I believe she's technically "abandon" her green card but does that make a difference to me? Does she have to be in the US and/or living with my step-dad for my application to be valid? Are there any other potential issues that may arise with applying for a green card through my step-father?

Any info on the topic will help thank you!
