Hi,

I gave interview for F-1 VISA on 28th June in Islamabad. The VO kept my passport and I-20 certificate and gave me 221(g) white letter. Since then my application status is administrating processing. I have been accepted for PhD Physics with complete funding and tuition fee waived. My PhD classes will start on 22 August. But I want to be in my university 1 week before my classes are started. Can any one give me any clue that I will have VISA before 12 August? Anyone passed through this experience? My university told me that I in case I did not received F-1 VISA on time they will issue me a new I-20 certificate for next semester.

No one here can tell you how long your AP will take. It is common for people from your country.

I hope it doesn't last too long

Good luck

Have you travelled outside of Pakistan before?

Why did you choose the USA for your studies, and how will you find them?

Is there anything the CO concentrated on during the interview?

What will your PhD be on exactly, could there be security concerns (such as nuclear physics)?

During interview the CO paid attention to my research. My research is related to theoretical condensed matter physics, which deal with properties of material at low energy (solid state physics). I don't have any research in nuclear physics neither I am interested in this field in future(Nuclear Physics deal with properties of nuclei within material at very high temperature). My research details, Publication, MS thesis title was mentioned in CV which he kept with himself. I never traveled outside Pakistan before. My MS thesis supervisor motivated me for PhD in USA as he also had PhD Degree from USA. PhD in theoretical Physics is best from USA what I observed during MS research. In USA during PhD student can also have suitable funding which is big advantage.

Limited chances to receive your visa by Aug 12th, given that folks from your country encounter significant scrutiny during AP.

I think, another important consideration is what are you going to do after your PhD. i.e. do you have immigration intent? I am not certain about research opportunities for physics PhD in your country. These things could have a bearing on you obtaining a visa.

Options:

- prepare for next semester

- if granted visa late, you can still travel to US of A and maybe work out an arrangement with your university to assist them in graduate assistant or some other capacity. this will make better use of your time than waiting until next semester and will also provide you an opportunity to acclimate yourself with academia and the culture.

Good Luck.
