Im a US citizen about to start the process of filing for my parents. My dad is 82 and my mum 75. They are both in the United States on a B1 B2 visa visiting me. I was thinking of doing the application while they were here. I'm not sure whether I can do the I-130 and I-485 simultaneously or the I-130 must be approved before I can file the I-485. They have a 5 year multiple entry visa and the I-94 is good for another 5 months. Will filing both shorten the process since I've heard that it may take over a year to have both the I-130 and I-485 approved? And what would the cost be for the process.

Off the topic question. Will they be able to qualify for Obamacare if the process is complete before open enrollment in January?

You need the NOA 1 for OCare, strongly suggest you look at the costs, premiums as well as uninsured costs.

The immigration costs are insignificant, hopefully they are independently wealthy.

Great article explaining health insurance options for your parents. I encourage you to read through all the information. Basically, your parents are not eligible for medicare until they have been an LPR for 5 years. Even then, they will have to pay the full premium themselves since they never worked here and paid into the system. Seems fair enough. In the mean time, they will need to purchase insurance through the private sector. Here they may qualify for tax credits. In general medicaid is similar in that you must be an LPR for 5 years to qualify for assistance, however this varies from state to state. Regardless, it will be important that you plan for the cost of their health insurance and expenses as the affidavit of support ( I864) that you will be submitting is stating that they will be able to financially take care of themselves and not become of burden of the state and tax payers.

The fees were told to you in your other thread.

Father

I-485 = $985

I-130 = $420

Mother

I-485=$985

I-130=$420

Biometric fee=$85

Your parents can definitely get insurance. It is just going to cost a lot. There is no way around it. If you have the funds, fine. But if not, then you should start developing a plan. You could be paying well into the high hundreds of dollars a month for premium insurance for the two of them at that age. Read the article agrabs posted. If you are in Maryland then check out its healthcare exchange. You can put in their information and see what the monthly cost will be.
