If they didn't set up this limit many people would abuse the residence permit. They could live abroad, keep their money in American banks, travel freely, would possibly have income in other countries and hide it or not report taxes to the US. So practically they would use privileges of a green card holder but would avoid responsibilities that come with it.

if this is your core concern- possibly have income in other countries and hide it or not report taxes to the US.

the US laws combat this

the US laws combat this for both Green Card Holders and Citizens.

Becoming a Naturalized citizen does nothing to reduce the risk to the US of possibly have income in other countries and hide it or not report taxes to the US.

Natural Born Citizens can also try to possibly have income in other countries and hide it or not report taxes to the US.

But for Green Card Holders and Citizens it is a very bad idea.

For those of you who didn't read the initial post but commented about choices, abandonment (really?) and re-entry permits.

I had two of them 2011-2013 & 2013-2015 to accommodate among other things my US Citizen spouse working abroad.

We lost our chance for a baby in 2010 because of this arbitrary punitive rule that could just as easily be 24 or 36 months without the "immigration problem" in the country suffering a bit.

My husband and I were not prepared to lose our last chance for a baby in 2015.

I'd gladly do the same thing again.

For a country that cherishes freedom, I find the relative lack of liberty compared to two other G7 countries (that I have researched so far) less competitive.

OP give it a break :diablo:

No one misread any part of this thread.

What we all collectively said was the following:

??The fact that you stopped following the rules filing needed paperwork is YOUR FAULT TO USA GOVERNMENTS.

??Your husband can reapply for you AGAIN and there are ways around time apart.

??Canada laws will not be implimented by the USA as our laws are easy to adhere to if you paid ATTENTION filed all nesesary paperwork and followed the law like ALL other.

??HAD you become a citizen you wouldnt HAVE this problem!!

??We ALL can agree your money is NOT I REPEAT NOT a deal breaker in our country so be rich and live in a country who will allow you to be you super human way.

??AGAIN YOU CHOSE THIS YOU MADE A GROWN UP DECISION NOT TO CONTINUE GETTING PERMITS. YOU DID AT FIRST SO ARGUING WHY DID YOU HAVE TO IS MUTE SINCE YOU KNOW YOU NEEDED TO BUT FELT WHY DID YOU HAVE TO WHILE LOOKING DOWN AT THE US GOVENMENT FROM YOU THROWN IN JAPAN

Someone add if I left anything out!!

Canada seconds you as they want no association with this thread

BRAZIL MEXICO NORTH POLE AND ALL OTHER MAYOR BANKING CAPITALS ALSO AGREE

PS South Korea thanks the OP for not wanting to move there and AUSTRALIA IS HOPPY AND Happy she didnt bother looking at them.

The Queen of England feels she can continue her reign with out having to make the tower of London accommodations.

And all mayor banks have put up an HR memo not to hire the OP

Sure we can call it wrapped up. There were a few bits of information that I am grateful for. Lots of hate and self righteousness too. Apart from a few commenters from the UK, there are not other G7 commenters, so the equation is very different, Hope you all enjoy your time in the States and none of you has any experience that expats frequently get that causes the rules to be an unnecessary red tape burden.

No as someone from one of the poorest places in the hemisphere, you cannot speak at all for Canada.

Japanese companies and you must know there are many operating in Canada, would prefer that people like me do immigrate.

Let's not go there!

I second the motion to close the thread.. before OP denigrates other nationalities and classes.
