 I guess you could have a nice "burial at sea" ceremony in the bathroom

That's cold!

Personally, I think the loss of a pet kind of gives parents an opportunity to prepare kids for the eventual loss of that grandparent or other close family member. The first thing I saw pass was my little dog (stupid thing went to sleep right in front of the wheel of neighbor's truck). That traumatic event gave my parents an opportunity to introduce me to the concept of the limited life-span of all living creatures. The departure of loved ones (with the exception of those departing untimely) has somehow become less of a tragedy since...

Ummmmm...no. First of all, that's something you do with fish not a hamster...lol. Secondly, we live in the Blue Ridge Mountains so we have a septic tank and he wouldn't go too far.

Do you know for sure that its truly dead and not too cold that it went into hibernation? I know this sounds silly but this happened to my hamster when I was a kid. We thought it was dead but my dad put it in a warm towel and it came back! LOL Freaked me right out!

I really think Allie is mature enough to know that a pet doesn't last forever and should get a chance to say goodbye . JMHO tho

Our hamster lived 4 years. She was the only hamster I ever knew with a personality. It was a sad day when she died. We dug a hole in the yard and had a funeral for her.

My kids were so sad but I told them to remember what a great life she had and how long she lived. She was 'brownie the escape artist'. She would escape every chance she got.

Once I heard something under my stove. I was sure it was a mouse, so being brave I got my 9 yr old up lol. We got our boots on and each took a broom ready to cream the intruder.....I opened the oven drawer and there was brownie. It was so funny.

Awwwww.....poor Alli. I guess this is one of lifes little experiances that you hate for your kids to experiance. :( Wow.....2 1/2 year old hamster? That is OLD for a little critter. I used to raise them for a local pet shop here in town and was always told that 18 months is old for a hamster. Alli must've given it a lot of love. (L)

Poor thing, it's never easy dealing with the passing of a pet. Heck, my dog has been gone for over 10 years and i still get all teary when I think about her.

Your daughter may not want another hammie, but maybe something else? A guinea pig? They are tonnes of fun and make lots of daft noises. Though from the looks of the other photos you have posted of her with your farm cows maybe she's more interested in the big beasties now...maybe you could get her a little goat or somesuch, they are lots of fun to hang out with.

How come?

Sorry to be so irreverent..it just hit my funny bone, picturing Sharon standing there saying 'oh damn' in a sort of resigned way...

I remember my own hamster's death... quite traumatic. :(
