Having filed my AOS/EAD/Travel Auth in May, I was wondering what is the next step to getting an SSN? I am still awaiting the EAD/Travel Auth in the mail, I understand AOS takes much longer, however, at which point do I receive an SSN? or how do I got about getting one?

Regards

Go to the SSN office and apply for one.

Are you a K-1 or what vise are you AOS from?

I applied 2 days after I got here on K-1 and got the card a week after.

If you are changing name you have to go back after you get your EAD to change the name on the SSN-card

if you came on CR1 there was a place to mark on the forms to NVC and immigration would have applied for the SS number when your POE packet was collected

It helps if people know what visa you came on and you fill in a timeline on your profile

our SS card came 2 weeks after POE

They filed for AOS, so they did not enter with a CR-1. Those with spousal visas do not need to file for AOS/EAD/AP.

OP> What did visa are you adjusting from? If not from a K visa with a valid I-94, then you will most likely need to receive the EAD or green card before going to apply at the SSA for your SSN. You will not just receive one.

Hi, I came here on a marriage visa. We got married on a previous visit to the States. We filed for AOS/EAD/Travel Auth during my I-94 but that has since expired although we filed before it expired.

At what point can one apply for a California driver's licence also?

Marriage visa don't file that so maybe you came on another visa?

Cali pretty much gives it to everyone so don't think you'll have a hard time getting a DL there

You will need to wait for your EAD or green card, then you can apply for an SSN.

~ Moved from AOS from Family Based Visas to AOS from Work, Student & Tourist Visas -AOS not from K visa, but from VWP entry~

trca101, you will need to have EAD and SSN to apply for California driver's license as they require a proof for you being in the country legally (EAD) and SSN if you're eligible for one (which you are after you receive EAD). I'm in a similar situation, my license expires next week and I can't renew until I receive those documents.

Hi,

My EAD/Travel Auth have been authorised. I assume they are in the mail, what forms do I need to file for an SSN?

You're gonna need your EAD card, Passport and Social Security card application form that you can find on this link https://www.ssa.gov/forms/ss-5.pdf

Just fill out the form and take it with those documents to the nearest social security office. You can use their website to locate an office nearest to you.

I haven't gone through the process myself yet, as I'm waiting for my card to arrive, but this is what I understood from the form's instructions.
