So I'm an F-1 student visa applying for AOS. Today, I went to social security office in San Francisco (bringing passport, I-94, NOA, marriage license...) hoping to change my last name on my current social security number. The lady rejected me and said that I wouldn't be able to change my name till everything go through (a.k.a till I get my green card).

I was skeptical about the name change but still go ahead and took my chance to walk-in to social security office. (I will be applying for internship under my new last name and I don't want to create any confusion). If you are in F-1 student, what was your experience in changing name? (I really thought I could change my social card when I card EAD - not when I get GC like how the lady said)

1/12/2019: 90- ROC filing window open
1/17/2019: Mail I-751 Package via USPS Certified Mail
1/22/2019: Package arrived
1/28/2019: Receive case number via text message  #WACxxxxxxxxxx
2/21/2019: Call USCIS for non-delivery notice receipt
2/29/2019: Receive 18-month extension letter (2 pages)

It's a hit or miss with the ssa offices. You'll have a better chance of changing your name there with an id with the married name, so if you filed your aos forms with the married name, try to go there again when you have the ead

I was on K1 and brought the same documents to SSA after getting married. They rejected me as well and told me to come back when I have an ID with my married name (EAD or GC). They check your married name in the USCIS system first before amending your SS, so if you have no records yet they won't be able to amend your SS--at least that what's the SS lady told me.

I applied for an SS number and Card with my married name, at first they said they had to confirm with USCIS since the name I'm applying for does not match my i-94 even with the marriage certificate. So I asked if I could just apply using my maiden name instead. The lady said 'no' but photocopied all my documents and contacted USCIS. after a couple of weeks SS called me saying they lost all my documents and I should come back to the SS office. After resubmitting my documents, I finally got an SS number and card in my married name after 4 days. I was joking with my hubby that the only reason they probably gave me one was because of the embarrassment of losing my papers lol.

Yep, that is exactly what the lady told me, but she never bothered to photocopy any of my documents. She just told me to come back when I have a valid ID. Did they give your SSN in your married name? Congrats!
