Sorry posting message again as not sure sure if i posted earlier in the right forum.

I just moved to Texas and i have started with my CNA( certified Nurse aide) classes. I do not have Texas state id . i have my green card which will expire tomorrow however i have the extension letter. When i was enrolling i was told by the school that with my New York state id i can enroll and when i asked if i will be allowed to sit for the National Nurse Aide Assessment Program to get my license, with my New York state id, i was told it shouldnt be problem. I paid the first installment. Since i dont have texas id and my green card is going to expire tommorrow i am getting worried.

In the candidate handbook from Pearson Vue, it says two forms of proper identification i have to bring to sit for the exam. I am not sure if my NY state id would be accepted.

I am getting worried if i'll be allowed to sit for the exam, i am worried if any Hospitals or Nursing homes will hire me later due to my expired green card and extension letter.i am worried because i dont drive and if anyone will still hire me.Because i think most places in texas wants you to have your own car to travel for work.

Any CNA's from Texas on VJ?

if anyone knows anything on this please share. Thanks

I'm thinking New York id should work. It's a legal identification card. I've used my Texas drivers license for id when I moved to Massachsehusetts and had no problem. They always tell you to change it later but they accept it. Well as for hiring, most will require a reliable transportation. Go to the RMV in Texas and they will convert your id for you in minutes. It looks like you got things to handle first. Use your passport for the exam and social is sometimes accepted. Bring all those on that day to be safe. Worry about that first and later start looking for job if you pass.

Thank you. I hope so they will accept my NY state id cause they havent specified if another state id is accepted or not They have mentioned id either from US Federal or state issued identification or a US passport besides the ssn.

I wanted to change it to Texas id but i am facing some issues right now because my green card has expired, though i have the extension letter, DPS wouldnt let me apply for texas id as they are telling me unless i have unexpired green card they cant help. someone on vj suggested to get a stamp on my foreign passport from USCIS filed office and if i manage to get it, i will then go back to the DPS to try again for Texas id. i am trying to focus one thing at a time it is making me go crazy.

Please keep yourself to one thread on the subject. If it's not in the right place the moderators will move it for you... Do not make multiple posts.

okay. Sorry about that. I will not do it again.

I'm not sure about the exam aspect, but I'm a nurse in Texas and maybe I can shed some light on the employment side. Unless you are planning to do home health, nobody is going to expect you to have a driver's license and a car. You just have to have reliable transportation to work. I work with a few nurses and CNAs who take the bus. Getting a job shouldn't be a problem with the green card and the extension letter. It will just take some explaining on your part. Succinctly explain that you are a permanent resident, and that your permanent green card is being processed. It has been my experience in Houston and Austin that hospitals are very familiar with immigration law and documents. I am sure once you have your license, you will be able to find work. There's a big shortage of good CNAs in Texas, so I am sure they will try their best to work with you.

By the way, call Pearson and ask if you can use an out-of-state ID, combined with your passport. I used my passport to take my nursing license exam back in 2010 without a problem.

On my second attempt i was able to get the Texas state id at the DPS office and i have already asked my school not to use my previous state id since i got the new one now. Are you an LVN or RN? The school i am attending for CNA is so slow, teacher comes late one or two hours late everyday. That is why we are not able to finish on time. CNA salary is too less to live just on that so i am thinking of doing either LVN or RN later but i am confused which one to choose. Do you think LVN is better? If i study lvn then i need to keep working as CNA meanwhile to pay my bills.I dont know if i will be able to manage cna work and then study for lvn because cna job will be hard. Also i dont know how to drive. I am working on it though. i will be going for permit test soon and after that practice to drive and then get DL. My teacher said that there is a huge requirement for CNAs but the problem is they dont get paid well and lot of work so they move to something else.I checked from craig list, its not home health but still some nursing home ask for DL. Hopefully some one will hire me when i have my cna license.

I worry sometimes that i shouldnt have moved here. Atleast no problem with transportation in NY.Even if you dont drive public transportation is very good and accessible. But if i move again, there will be problem with my green card. It is going to get delayed more.
