Hi!!

I'm going to become US citizen in either Sep or Oct this year. Meanwhile, I want to look up all documents needed to petition my mother to live in USA with me. by the time come, I can be ready quickly because it takes time to mail some paper from Viet Nam to USA. by looking up this on USCIS, they require:

  • Form I-130
  • A copy of your birth certificate showing your name and your mother’s name
  • A copy of your Certificate of Naturalization or U.S. passport if you were not born in the United State

besides all these documents, what's else should i have to prepare? does my mother need to submit any document to US embassy in VN or I'm the one who submit everything in US?

thanks a lot. :goofy::goofy::goofy:

That's what you need to file the petition. It currently costs $420 and you will need to send a check or money order for that amount with your petition. If you live in New York, you send it to the Chicago lock box. The whole process will take about a year.

Timeline in brief:

Married: September 27, 2014

I-130 filed: February 5, 2016

NOA1: February 8, 2016 Nebraska

NOA2: July 21, 2016

Interview: December 6, 2016 London

POE: December 19, 2016 Las Vegas

N-400 filed: September 30, 2019

Interview: March 22, 2021 Seattle

Oath: March 22, 2021 COVID-style same-day oath

Now a US citizen!

Here you go, dear. This is the official website that has all the information about petitioning a relative:

https://travel.state.gov/content/visas/en/immigrate/immigrant-process/petition.html

As of now, you really cannot prepare much. Like JFH said, get those three documents ready along with the fee. The day you become a citizen you can file the I-130 petition. Then the long wait begins - about 4-6 months just for USCIS to approve it. After that you start preparing the additional documentation that is listed in the link above.

Godspeed!
