Good early morning! I'd really like some assistance with this because I'm going crazy.

I was born in Ukraine. My birth certificate shows my name in Ukrainian which is Yevhen.

In 2000, when I was 14 years old, my family was granted refugee status (not asylum) by US embassy in Moscow. For one reason or another, the name that was put in all of my American documents by the embassy personnel was Yevgeniy, which is basically the Russian version of my Ukrainian name Yevhen.

Even though my passport showed Yevhen, I entered the US under the name Yevgeniy. My I-94, Social Security card and everything else has the name Yevgeniy. I grew up and have lived with this name for all these years. I even became US citizen with this name.

Recently, I needed to produce a copy of my birth certificate which contains the name Yevhen. Since I am now Yevgeniy I was asked to produce the document which certifies the name change from Yevhen to Yevgeniy. Obviously, such document doesn't exist. Yevhen and Yevgeniy are the same name in different languages but American organizations don't understand this fact. To them it seems like I had changed my name at some point of my life. I was told that my birth certificate is not valid because it possibly belongs to someone else, that someone else being Yevhen.

My explanation did not satisfy them. They demand to see actual documents that never existed!

What can I do? My birth certificate is not recognized because I am Yevgeniy, not Yevhen. I'm afraid that if I ever again get into position of having to produce a birth certificate for important reasons it won't be recognized.

I would appreciate any suggestion. Thank you.

PS. I have no idea why the embassy in Moscow Russified my name from its Ukrainian version.

My husband is Arabic and his name has been translated differently several different ways on different documents throughout his life. It's a different alphabet and translation to English varies depending on who did the translation. When we applied for his visa he was told to use the spelling that is in his passport, which is different than the spelling on his birth certificate, a 3rd and different spelling on his police clearance, and a 4th and different spelling on our marriage contract and certificates, and believe it or not a 5th and different spelling on his college degree. What visa are you applying for and who is asking for proof that the name was legally changed? The USCIS, NVC and the consulate were well aware that Arabic can be and is translated to English with different variations.
