I-864 RFE

We got a RFE that stated:

Please submit an I-864 for your joint sponsor with an original signature. The I-864 you submitted is a copy and does not contain an original signature as required.

What does this mean? Every form we submitted were photocopies, because in the USCIS Assembling applications tips they state to send photocopies. So why are they asking for original signature?

Also they sent us an I-864 form to us. We already have the filled original form with my father-in-law's signatue. Why can't I sent it? Why do I have to send a new I-864?

They want to see the original copies. Photocopy them and keep them for yourself and send in the originals. Then toss the blank copy that they sent you in the trash if you don't need it.

I didn't send "copies" of any of the actual forms, just copies of supporting documents as I figured they would want my original signature.

The photocopies that you are suppose to send is for supporting documents, but the forms, you should send the originals and keep the photocopies.

This is a common amatuer mistake. I went so far as to make sure all of our forms were signed in blue ink so there could be no possibility of this error.

On the positive side it is an easily correctable error.

It sucks. They RFE's me for not completing section seven when the instructions CLEARLY indicateed that it was not needed in my case. Personally, I think they do this sort of thing to help their processing timeline statistics.

Resubmit with an original signature and try to not let it bother you. I know it isn't easy, but try!

First off, NOWHERE on VJ does it say copies of the forms are to be submitted.

Secondly, they never said you can't submit the original one that's already filled out. So submit that one.

Yep, as stated above, you need to send in orignals of the actual forms (I-864, I-130, I-485, etc). I did the same as tiberonsuave, I signed all of the forms in bright blue ink so that they could plainly see it wasnt a photocopied signature.

I think with them sending the blank form, they were trying to be helpful - that makes a first!

In my RFE I had forgotten to sign one page on the I-864A where the sponsor signs up top and then the cosponsor signs at the bottom. I only had the cosponsor sign it. So in my RFE they sent me they sent just that one page (the last page of the I-864A) with instructions for BOTH of us to sign it.
