I'm American and my friend is Vietnamese, she is pregnant and I need to find out information about how births are handled abroad. I've been supporting and helping her while she is pregnant (but we aren't together anymore). Eventually I'd like the child and mother to come to the states, but that may take a year or so to get prepared.

Can anyone explain how a birth like this works with the Vietnamese government? How a Vietnamese birth certificate works or birth abroad of US citizens? And like I said the ultimate goal will be bringing the baby and mother over to live in the states, but unfortunately at the moment I can not trust the mother and what she says. So I also need to know what type of 'liability' I create for myself when making a birth certificate or registering the birth abroad. I have gotten the impression from her that she'd prefer staying in Vietnam with the baby and me just giving her money for support (although she denies this). And I want to know if she will have this ultimatum power over me to declare the baby stays in Vietnam but I'm forced to pay support. Ideally I want some leverage to make sure the baby can eventually come to live in the states.

thanks

No avenue for the mother to come to the US unless you marry her. The child is a different matter if he/she has a US parent.

The child has a US father (me), if the child was living in the US as a US citizen, there is no avenue for the mother to come over? I thought parents/entire families eventually immigrate after one or more members get citizenship?

When the child is 21 he/she can petition the mother to come to the US. (very long wait)

That's very disappointing to hear. Will the mother be able to keep the child in Vietnam if she desires, yet force me to pay support? (I will support the child no matter what happens, but I need to understand what power she has and what I'm 'required' to do by law, because financial support may be my only negotiating power to get the child US educated)

Not a lot I would imagine unless she has legal representation in the US to force child support.

There is no way she can claim you for supporting, unless you are volunteering to do so. Cylone had answered about mother comes to US. As of my knowledge, you can't get a baby out of country if the mother refused you from doing so. Anyways, just to be sure talk to immigration laywers about this. Peace

Often misconceived by immigrants that having a USC child automatically gives the mother citizenship. Google the term "anchor baby".

Up until 18 years of age the child would need the mother's consent to come to the US, even for visits. As already mentioned speak to a competent lawyer on options of taking care of the child from abroad.
