Interesting fact John Mellencamp was given that guitar by Guthrie. He played it on the showtime Original series "Roadies" on the last episode, while giving a music lesson.

i would be partial to the original, but i really only respond well to patriotism espoused by bruce, lana del rey, or choking victim/leftover crack.

My question repeatedly on this forum during the primary process; why was Kasich not good enough for voters? Every poll showed him beating Hillary and being competitive against Bernie.

I think there is something wrong with a process that takes three years to pick someone for a four year job, and returns these results.

First of all, I don't think the majority of voters actually understand polling. It seems like a lot of voters figure elections to be a statistical crapshoot where the candidate you put forward has a 50/50 chance of beating the other side in November. Not true. Kasich would have had a landslide against Hillary. Rubio would have won comfortably. Even Jeb! would have had a good shot.

I'm not sure it was so much that Kasich wasn't good enough for voters, just as I'm not sure that Martin O'Malley wasn't good enough.

It really isn't about policy after Iowa and new Hampshire. It's about what candidate do you side with the most, who also has a decent chance of winning.

Kasich barely got any media attention. Actual policy doesn't get much media attention whether you're watching Fox News, MSNBC or CNN. What does get media attention are bombastic statements and controversy. That's how Bernie Sanders got as far as he did, and that's how Trump got billions of dollars worth of free campaign advertising from cable news. I'm not even sure most voters had heard of Kasich outside of Ohio and New Hampshire. And that was after Rubio's debate gaffe and Kasich campaigning the living daylights out of New Hampshire for three months.

By the time Rubio dropped out in March, Kasich was already mathematically eliminated from reaching 1,237 delegates, and the anti-Trump movement's only realistic candidate left was Ted Cruz.

Ted Cruz just happened to be just as unappealing to many voters as Trump was.

And the reason these others did not win the primary is....?

Trump won a fairly consistent 30% - 35% in most of the primaries. You don't need a majority of voters to support you if the field is crowded with 17 candidates. You need a plurality until your competition is gone.

The anti-Trump crowd split among Cruz, Rubio, Kasich and Carson throughout much of the primary. Trump didn't reach 1037 delegates until the very end after all others had dropped out, and even then, just barely. There were three main lanes in the GOP primary. There was the Christian right (Cruz, Carson), the moderate, more establishment lane (Rubio, Kasich, Bush, Christie), and the populist right (Trump). Only Trump had his own lane.

That's why a typical primary result in February looked like this:

Trump 35%

Rubio 20%

Cruz 20%

Carson 8%

Bush 7%

Kasich 5%

Christie 5%

If you had added up Rubio/Bush/Kasich/Christie in the first primaries, or Cruz/Carson, each would have been tied with or beat Trump.

In the end it became a battle between Cruz and Trump. Can't blame anyone for voting Trump in that match-up.

A better primary model would be that all primaries held on the same day, and then a second round between two candidates should no one receive 50% or more in the first round.
