conservatives/republicans that can't get behind trump need to be louder than the trump sheep. trump could actually be what saves the gop long term. not by becoming president but by uniting the sound and reasonable members of the party. trump also provides the opportunity to distance the party from the influence of the crazed evangelicals they've been saddled with (since most of them are team trump).

trump has actually made me like and root for *a very little* the republicans who have refused to endorse him. i rarely never ever root for republicans, it feels weird.

What worries me the most is the Bernie supporters. I don't think Hillary wins just because of us anti-Trump people voting for her. She needs the Bernie supporters to vote for her also. Without the Bernie votes; we could have President Trump.

I remember during the primaries how it kept being written that Trump was winning the evangelical vote. But, when they looked at the numbers closer, there was a definite pattern. Among those who call themselves evangelical, those who don't go to church supported Trump; but those who do go to church, weren't supporting Trump. I wonder how that's going to hold up during the general election? There are a lot of Christians who will have trouble voting for Hillary just because of abortion. But I don't know if they can support Trump either. If church going evangelicals stay home, that will be good for Hillary.

One of the highlights for me was when Max Lucado wrote about Trump. Lucado really doesn't get involved in politics, so it was really cool to me that he spoke up.

And, while I'm talking about religion, here's a real weird thing. For the last 8 years, the extreme part of my party has been questioning Obama. Is he Christian? Is he Muslim? Because the President must be Christian?

So, who do my guys nominate? A guy who is obviously not Christian? This is nuts.

hillary will get a portion of bernie supporters because many will honor what bernie has asked of them and understand why he endorsed hillary.

personally, i find it insulting that americans are even being asked to vote at all this year. we should all abstain in disgust. certainly there's an autopilot switch that's good for at least 6 months..

If only we could have a do over on this nomination process. I think things would turn out very differently.

I think this is a good point. Whichever party loses in November will be in a severe crisis. Personally, I'd love to see that 0.1% chance of Gary Johnson winning, forcing both parties undergo major overhaul, or even a breakup of the two-party system altogether.

However, I think a Trump loss in November could be beneficial to the GOP in the long run. The stranglehold that the evangelical right has had over the GOP for the past two decades died in Indiana with Ted Cruz's campaign. The stranglehold that the populist right currently has over the GOP could very will die in November with Trump's campaign. If you're an old school Republican, you'd probably be better served by a respectable campaign in 2020 than 4 years of Donald Trump re-branding the party. National Review actually wrote a piece about how a Hillary Clinton victory might be the lesser of two evils if you're the NR-type conservative. http://www.nationalreview.com/postmodern-conservative/438336/donald-trump-greater-evil

What has baffled me about Republicans this primary season is their failure to nominate a candidate who could actually bring back the Reagan era they all so vehemently reminisce about. Kasich or even Rubio would have likely beat Clinton in a landslide, quite possibly minimizing the demographic gap the GOP has ended up in. Instead, the two candidates left in the mix were Trump and Cruz, the two candidates least likely to beat Clinton.

I have never in my life supported a Republican in a general election, but some of the most educated and respectable people I have ever met have are old school classic Republicans. I would have been ready to put my support (can't vote) behind a Jon Huntsman-type Republican this year - Kasich, maybe even Bush or Rubio. Now I just praise myself lucky I can't vote.

It's funny because for a while my wife and I were hoping I would be done with my naturalization in time to get to vote, but now that it seems like that might actually happen, I don't want to vote. Kind of like nobody wants to have bad memories about the first time they had sex ya know? I don't want these to be my first elections lol. We can't get behind Trump. We also can't get behind Clinton.

I think it is entirely possible for Clinton, if elected, to be a one term president, and in 2020 for it to go to the GOP again. In fact, I have said a couple times in the past year that in these elections you should probably vote for the person you like least, not most. Chances are it will be what ends their political career, or close to it.

  • Mark Kirk, Illinois senator
  • Mitt Romney, former Massachusetts governor, 2012 Republican presidential nominee
  • Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, Florida congresswoman
  • Ben Sasse, Nebraska senator
Republicans voting for Mrs Clinton
  • Richard Armitage, former deputy secretary of state
  • Hank Paulson, former treasury secretary
  • Brent Scowcroft, former national security adviser
  • Richard Hanna, New York congressman

Larry Hogan is a great republican governor, in a state that is hardline blue. He's won over both sides of the aisle and has a high approval rating. He's not a political wonk by any means, is an exceedingly giving guy, and isn't easily bullied and isn't afraid to speak his mind. His wife is an immigrant, and she is 100% a wonderful and classy first lady of this state. You can really tell he adores her. If he ever ran for President one day, there's a republican I would consider voting for. He took some flack for not supporting Trump, but I'm confident there's a lot of people in Hogan's camp that will be following his lead and not voting for Trump either.

The problem is as you describe, there may be church-goers who aren't voting Trump, but overwhelmingly.. the trend in America.. is a redefinition of what it means to be a 'Christian' and a move away from going to church entirely. I also can't stress this enough, but there are some 'Christians', believing this to be the 'end times', and that they should 'help further it along' by voting Trump. No, I'm not kidding. This mentality has come out of aspects of the evangelical community.

In that respect, I fear though that a lot of the influence of theologians and those with a message like Lucado will be lost on those who are critically important to reach.

It was not too long ago where there were plenty of Republicans who were willing to vote for Hillary. What's strange enough is, the abortion issue is one of the big sticking points. But, there hasn't been a single President elected by the evangelical vote recently who would or could actually stop abortion. Bush certainly did not and I don't believe Romney would have either.

All potential focus groups, like evangelicals (both churchgoing and non) are being used as pawns in a very long con game. The intentional doublespeak language he uses and is coached to use as seen in internal memos regarding his meetings with such groups are meant to avoid real answers and ride a feeling. Because if you can prey upon feelings and turn them into facts then you start exerting some control over the message without having to do much. http://thefederalist.com/2016/06/23/5-most-sickening-parts-of-trumps-meeting-with-evangelical-leaders/

I guess what I'm saying here is: there will be plenty of Christians who won't vote for him, some that will ride the feeling and vote for him not really sure they know a single thing he's about, and then scarily there will be others that actually do know the bad place he's coming from and that it's necessary to do so for a reason that.. well.. I'll stop there.

I think this is a good point. Whichever party loses in November will be in a severe crisis. Personally, I'd love to see that 0.1% chance of Gary Johnson winning, forcing both parties undergo major overhaul, or even a breakup of the two-party system altogether.

Certainly agree, I like someone that defies all odds. I can't quite get behind Johnson though personally, there's things I like.. things I really don't like.. and not enough confidence he'd actually win. Absolutely agree that a Trump loss would systematically put the GOP into a dumpster, set it alight, and hurl it into a black hole in space. But, that this is a good thing. A really good thing, and a way to get it back on track. It's time for them to grow up. The old guard will probably hang on, but they are going to have to make better efforts to ensure the party doesn't split into crazy-ville again. I somewhat hope Cruz is also in that dumpster. While I still don't think Rubio would have beat Clinton (and I know many will think I'm very wrong on that), I don't know why they didn't man up and go toward Kasich. This really speaks to the utter rift in the party... maybe it has to do with who is in charge. The fiasco that went on at the RNC between delegates and Trump's camp was absolutely horrible in many of the conservative reports and eye-witness accounts.

I think it is entirely possible for Clinton, if elected, to be a one term president, and in 2020 for it to go to the GOP again. In fact, I have said a couple times in the past year that in these elections you should probably vote for the person you like least, not most. Very possible. We'd have to see how she'd do, but more importantly how the GOP could recover and or get their act together into a cohesive rebrand. Doable.

I basically agree but there is no doubt Trump was baited.

The life of a President is such that he is baited constantly and that is the point, act presidential when (not if) baited.

Trump has hissy fits and melt downs just over tweets. Daily. Scary stuff to see him lose it over anyone who does not lavish

praise on him.

If it is not one thing it's another.

I don't care who says what. If he can't stand the heat then he needs to get out of the kitchen.

His ego is so dang fragile....he inflates it to overcompensate and then blows up and babbles nonsense.

I actually heard him say : "You are all so honored to get to honor me today" at a rally on a clip. :o

I am just speechless. Just when I think it can not get any worse he trumps himself again and again.

Enough is enough of this madness. He will self destruct. Eventually..... :clock:

If he cannot handle a little criticism, he needs to stay out of politics. As president his lack of discipline Wil destroy this country

On CNN.com there is a link titled Has Trump gone too far? It has been there for months, but the content changes. Maybe the will just make it a regular feature
