I would strongly advice you to wait until you get your GC. Any job that you get, HR will ask you to show proof that you are legal to work in US. That means either a GC, US passport, Citizenship certificate, work permit, or Work visa. SSN does not fulfill all the requirements...

It would be a waste of time for you and the company if you could not provide it by the time you get hired. So, why take risk and burn bridges with employers....

Use your time to get to know US and its culture.... Believe me, once you start working, you won't have any time for anything.. because we just work work work.... ;-)

Take care...

That's not completely true. Your stamped CR1/IR1 visa upon entry into the US can act as your i-551 while waiting for your actual GC to arrive in the mail. There are times where the GC can take months to arrive, and some people cannot afford to be idle for that long. Once you have your SSN you can start applying for work.

Doesn't the 1551 in the passport work as a temporary alternative to the green card for a year? I read that HR will use that as proof of residence until the green card comes...?

May be that's the case... however I thought the stamp in passport was only works to travel outside country and back... one of my friend's wife had hard time convincing HR regarding that so I advice to wait until GC.

All the best! Let us know if this works for you. It would be good to know so my wife don't have to wait for 4 months to look for job :-)

The stamp is also for work purposes, not just for travel (https://www.uscis.gov/i-9-central/temporary-i-551-stamps-and-mrivs). I don't know why your friend's wife had a difficult time convincing HR, but according to USCIS, that and along with the CR1/IR1 visa should be enough documentation. Maybe she didn't have a SSN yet? I know some companies won't hire you unless you have a SSN.

The stamp in your passport is temporary visa until GC is received. Just need to wait for SSN, before being able to apply for jobs. I had an interview this morning and they were fine with the stamp in my passport. Took a week to get my social security number.

Had my interview yesterday and APPROVED! :dancing::dancing::thumbs::)

Looong wait but only got asked two questions specific to my case. So happy very happy!

1. How did you meet your husband

2. When did your husband go to the US

They asked everybody these questions:

1. Have you ever been outside your country

2. Have you ever been arrested

3. Who is filing for you

Can't wait to be with him (L)

Congratulations!!!

Usually they get sent out 3 to 4 weeks before interview.

Somebody told me that sometimes they don't send it in time..it's that true?

I think the only instances where NVC doesn't send the case in time is if the petitioner reschedules the interview to an earlier date than NVC scheduled. Otherwise they are always on time. No worries ;)
