Congressional candidate allegedly driving ‘stolen’ van claims police ‘conspiracy’

Jesse Wineberry, a Seattle Democrat running for Congress, was detained after driving a van that was reported stolen and being extremely uncooperative with police. And now he’s claiming a “conspiracy” to stifle his political career, according to a police report.

Seattle Police Officer Benjamin Flick found a red Toyota that had been reported stolen in the 1500 block of Occidental Avenue South on July 20, according to the report. Wineberry, 61, was the driver and was asked repeatedly to exit the vehicle but did not comply.

The liberal elite ... know that the people simply cannot be trusted; that they are incapable of just and fair self-government; that left to their own devices, their society will be racist, sexist, homophobic, and inequitable -- and the liberal elite know how to fix things. Black candidate Jesse Wineberry says police racially profiled him after Times editorial’s error

Wineberry said he was detained by police July 20 on suspicion of traveling alone in a stolen rental van.

After complying with orders to get out of the minivan, Wineberry said he was placed into handcuffs and read his Miranda rights. Cellphone video taken by a spectator and obtained by his campaign shows Wineberry standing outside the van and surrounded by five police officers while his wrists are placed into handcuffs.

Wineberry said the minivan had been reported stolen after a misunderstanding with the rental-car company. He said that unbeknown to him, his campaign staff had failed to extend the rental agreement for the van.
