Lucky you.  California limits your ID by the last date of your legal status.

This is what I don't get.  Immigration is a federal issue.  So the state is basing their decision on a federal issue.

I'm not arguing with you 4444510, I've heard this argument before, and believe it to be unfair.  The state is basing their decision on a federal granted benefit - i.e your green card - or I551.

Either states should say - a license is based on your federal immigration status, or it isn't.

But I have no idea how you argue against a state - because licenses are a state issued document.

This is where the United States of America - federal v state loses me.

You went to the Seattle office, eh?   That's strange since I went to the same office.

I got extended for one year and nobody took my Green Card away (I'll need a copy of it to apply for citizenship).

Yes - I guess it varies officer to officer? Luckily, the paperwork for naturalization has already been sent so we have a copy of the GC.

Crossing our fingers we get processed soon!

At the 551 stamp appointment today, they only extended by six months and took the green card. Is this normal? I thought it was a year and you kept the green card?

Some get 1 year, I got an one year extension myself, some get 6 months. Not a big deal, if you need to be extended when 6 months are almost up, then make an appointment again. I would not lose sleep over this.

I hear you - I don't know what to say.

All I can say is - an I551 is a green card.  Google says it.  USCIS says it.  My passport says it - I just went and looked - my stamp says I551.

The plastic card says I551.  What's the difference?  One is made out of plastic.  One is an embossed stamp.

So what do you do if you are in a DMV and they refuse your legal embossed stamp I551?  It's the same as them refusing your legal plastic I551?

Has anyone had this happen to them and what did they do?  I don't know.  Never happen to me - my FL DMV kindly gave me an 8 year license, so hopefully i wont be waiting on condition removal that long.

But its a good point - and something that must worry users - so who has managed a DMV renewal with a stamp?  And who has been refused?  And if so, how did you resolve it?

It's good to know that an I551 is both the stamp AND the card - I honestly didn't know. I just thought they were substitutes.

Since Immigration Officers interpret rules differently, like how GC are taken vs. returned and length of extension, that border control might do the same? A stamp in a passport makes me nervous. I was in the Netherlands returning to the US and the Danish Consulate had issued a temporary extension to Kasper's passport - it was a huge deal. They had to call supervisors to see whether it was good enough and we got asked how they could know we didn't just make the stamp and sign it - which....we really had no answer? Technically anyone could try to make a stamp and sign it?

For this, once they input the A-number it shouldn't be a problem.

If you have applied for citizenship, your I-751 and N-400 applications MIGHT be combined.  That could mean that you MAY not receive your 10-year Green Card ever!    If they conduct your I-751 interview with your citizenship interview, you'll just end up becoming a US citizenship.  -_-

Since the Seattle office is processing citizenship applications in 7-9 months, you may need to get another stamp since your 6-month stamp probably expires before you become a US citizen.  :(  In that case, you'll need to make another InfoPass appointment.  <_<

I entered the US to become a permanent resident after the I-130 process.  :star:  Since I rented a car to move my belongings from Vancouver, Canada to Seattle, I had to go back to Vancouver, Canada to return the rental car.     I used the same visa (to become a permanent resident) in my passport to enter the US (by land) the next day, but my immigration officer asked me why I didn't have a Green Card. :dead:  I told him that I just became a permanent resident and was still waiting for a Green Card.    He was okay with my answer, but I got the impression that they usually expect that we have a Green Card.

I quite understand why you would feel nervous.

Lots of reports about how some employers don't like it, but DMV's you should be fine.

Some foreign airlines may be tricky but if you can back it up with documentation that explains what the stamp it, this could help:

arriving at the PoE should be fine. You would hope they would know what the stamp looks like 😝😝

Yes, you have to be married to an American and you have to have the conditional green card for 3 years minus 90 days, and that will be the earlier you can apply. If you got a divorce, you probably won't be able to apply early unless you can give USCIS reasons why there was a divorce like domestic abuse or something. You may have to ask legal advice from a lawyer or someone who knows more about this.
