Ok This is my first post so I'm not sure where to put this question. I have several questions so I assume I have to put one question per thread. Forgive my bad grammar if I have any.

I'm an American citizen who lives in central Kentucky and I'm engaged to a woman from Indonesia. She lives in central Java island. We are now trying to figure out everything we need to do and in what order to get her a fiancé visa and get her over here and get her adjustment of status started.

My question is about support affidavits. I'm currently between jobs so I wont be able to prove that I meet the poverty level income requirement, but I read in many places online that I can have a joint sponsor or co-sponsor. What is the difference between the two? Also, I found someone who I think might be willing to be the sponsor but I'm not sure if he'll agree to it or not. He will probably want to know exactly, in detail, what all responsibilities it entails. He's my uncle, so another question I have is: does the co-sponsor have to be someone who would be living in the same domicile as my fiancé or is that not required? My dad was gonna try to be co-sponsor (or joint sponsor, still not sure what the difference is) but he wont be able to meet the threshold requirement either.

There is not really a difference between co and joint, other than around here it is usually called co-sponsor for the I-134/K-1 visa and the actual correct term of joint sponsor is used for the I-864(AOS).

Any USC or LPR with US residence anywhere can be a co/joint sponsor. They just need to make enough for their own household size plus the intending immigrant.

If between jobs, why not wait until you have one though? It can make your problems with affidavit of support forms diminish, and you would be able to support your new bride once she is here and you marry. She will not be able to work right away, so you will need to have income to support you both.

I put in job applications and I'm likely to be getting one soon but I seriously doubt it'll give me enough to be the sponsor myself. But like, what all exact responsibilities would a co-sponsor have? Would he have to give any money like say, during the first year or two etc.? Because he likely wouldn't sign it if he thinks he'll have to actually pay anything at any point, since he'll say that it is (and it is) my responsibility not his.

Also, after I get the income I need, is there any way of changing the sponsor from being him to being just me?

The co/joint sponsor is not responsible for giving you any money for daily living support. They are signing to agree to paying back the government, should the govt actually sue them for it, if the immigrant becomes a public charge and receives public assistance that they should not. The I-134 is not even legally binding, so it would never happen by signing that one for the K-1 visa.

The I-864 is legally binding, so if you still need a joint sponsor for AOS, then the joint sponsor should read through the I-864 instructions and form itself for information on what their obligations are and when they would terminate.

I was dealing with a similar issue. My lawyer told me as long as I have employment for a few months before her interview and it's a permanent position with enough pay we should be fine. I just filed two weeks ago and started working last week. Hoping things pan out that this last long term. Hope you the best. I am also in central KY in Lexington.

Your best bet if you require a cosponsor would be to pursue a K-3 and get married overseas. You can use a cosponsor for sure with a K-3. K-1 visa applications for people from that pacific region have consulates typically do not allow for a cosponsor and you must meet the income requirements. I spent many a sleepless nights worried about finding work and if me and my fiancé will be together and happy again. Now it's just the long wait.

Some people have used a co-sponsor at Jakarta. http://www.visajourney.com/forums/topic/436944-us-embassy-jakarta-allows-co-sponsor/page-2#entry6436010

The OP can contact the Jakarta consulate and directly ask them if they allow co-sponsors for the K-1 visa.

And if they were going to marry and file for a spousal visa instead, it would be the CR-1. The K-3 is nearly extinct.

I asked my fiancé which consulate she'd have to go to for interview, so I could know which consulate to ask whether or not they accept co-sponsors. She said Jakarta or Surabaya. Does anyone here have any past experience with or know whether those two places accept co-sponsors or not. She also said she read or heard that workers at consulates there can be very rude, though that could just be hearsay.

Mostly they want to see your convo's, logs, calls, all kinds of genuine relationship evidence from the time you filed to the interview. For example; I take a bunch of new skype logs with me, pictures from my latest trip during the K1 to my fiancé. You shall need a new Intent to Marry, just typed out and blank ink signed by both of you. One typed by her, one by you, signed. Affidavit of Support from you, originally signed. And I don't really know what Indonesia really requires but gather much evidence as possible.
