We've been separated for almost 8 years (separated but not legally). i am now applying for my citizenship under 5 years. i do not know what i am going to check regarding my marital status. do i need to check married or separated? i want to check married because that is my real marital status but i dont the officer ask me where is he (husband) because i know for a fact he will not help me to get my citizenship. please help me what do i need to do? ive been here for 9 years now.

thank you

heidy

I suggest you check "Separated" which is applicable in your case and tell the truth during the interview if asked. You've stayed in the US with GC long enough that your marital history might not have any impact on getting the citizenship but lying does.

You don't need his birth certificate, but you do need his prior divorce degree since you are still married to him. Best option is to divorce him before applying for citizenship.

this is going to be a problem... because i do know for sure that he will not going to give me his previous divorce degree paper, he already told me that he will not going to help me to get my citizenship. and i read that when you filed a divorce prior to your application of citizenship will be a big question. i am really getting a headache of this application... but thanks
