I took his lastname cuz everybody thinks my first name and his last name go together so beautifully. Plus I didn't want to be stuck with my exhusbands crappy lastname anymore!

We're not married yet, but Dan once asked me whether I want to take his last name or not. It's all up to me. It's not a problem. Just because a woman takes her husband's last name it doesn't mean she's being submissive.

I never even considered not taking my husbands last name; the thought never even entered my mind.

Being a new immigrant, I already had a complete loss of identity, so changing my name was not a problem. Likewise, I didn't need my maiden name professionally, although I can understand that being a strong reason for wanting to keep your name. I don't consider myself a possession of my husband, but I do consider us part of the same "team" and it is an identifier.

I guess I don't understand women who want to hold their maiden name for anything other than professional reasons, but that's be cause I come from a culture where women typically change their name. I certainly don't think that not changing it implies a lower level of commitment.

It's a personal choice. I am going to change my last name when I get married (and keep my maiden name as a middle name). I am looking forward to it, because to me it symbolizes the union of the two of us.
