Muslim women are free not to change her last name to their husband's, but some do and some don't. It's not like you forget who your father is or what your lineage is when you change your name. If you notice, how last names are handled varies all over the Muslim world. In Muslim and non-Muslim societies, women don't always take their husband's last name, and the children sometimes get both last names.

But when we turn to the Hebrew literature, we do not find such jokes about the donkey. Rather the animal is known for its strength and its loyalty to its master (Genesis 49:14; Numbers 22:30).

I know a German judge that would say it's OK to beat her for not taking it.

To me...it's not that big of a deal. I think names are names and whether I have mine or not doesn't determine my own personal feelings towards my cultural past.

However, changing my name was important to my husband. He couldn't wait for me to legally take his last name. It makes him feel good...so I don't mind using it. It's better than my last name anyway :P

I changed my name to my husband's because I am not close to my father at all. It didn't hold any sentimental value for me, and I feel that my husband is my family now.

There are a lot of cultures in which the woman always keeps her name so that should be a determination in the process. Personally I like the woman to take the man's name, but my heritage is Anglo and that's the tradition. However, in modern day America, women are tending to keep their maiden names more and more.

Does it mean they are ready for divorce at any time or just trying to be more involved with themselves. I am glad that my wife chose to take my name, but then, that is her culture also. Some couples have even opted for using both names with hyphens and all that stuff.

So, to each his own. But, if you expect someone to take your name or they expect you to take theirs, you had better discuss it up front. For some people this is a really big deal.

I think that ther is something quite nice about a woman keeping her family name. My husband thought it was strange that I take his. I think in our society its much easier esp if you have children in common. Nice to have the choice.

I took my husband's last name because I have never really liked my real last name, and his is way better. Also, my maiden name is a bit famous and I'm tired of answering the OMG are you related to blah blah blah questions.

i took my husband's last name because my maiden name was johnson. millions of them out there...made international travel complicated... plus, my husband's last name is beautiful. when people compliment me on my last name, i always joke that i married my husband purely for his last name....

but if i would have married someone who's last name was smith or anderson, i probably would have stuck with mine.

one of my friends had a baby with her boyfriend...they gave the baby a last name that combined their last name into one. they are now engaged, and plan to have the same name as their daughter....lol.

Is there a single culture where it's mandatory for a woman to take her husbands name?
