Hi. My fiance is beginning the process of collecting documents for Packet 3. A few concerns/questions have come up. When he goes to get his birth certificate and then the single certificate...is he able to do that alone? He is an adult but he wonders if his parents will be required for some reason. Is a copy of the house registry required?

Can he just show up with his ID card and passport?

Hi there,

For a single certificate, he doesn't need to take his parents if he is older than 18. I went to get my single certificate at a local district (amphur where I am listed on a house registration) a few weeks ago. It is relatively easy, so here are the lists of what your fiance needs to bring

1. House registration (ทะเบียนบ้าน original and photocopied)

2. Thai I.D (original and photocopied)

3. Two witnesses. They can be his friends, parents, or siblings (I brought my dad and my sister as witnesses)

4. 20 baht

The process should be done within 1 or 2 days. I got mine the same day.

Also, when your fiance goes there, make sure he tells officials that he wants it for the U.S. fiance visa.

And I am sorry I have no idea regarding a birth certificate

Your welcome. Also,I forgot to mention that make sure the two witnesses bring thier Thai I.D. too (both original and photocopied). I belive the witnesses have to be older than 18 and they will be asked to fill out some forms as well.

The most important thing about the single certificate is that you need to call to check with the district that he is listed in about the witnesses first. Some places need both of his parents(both mom and dad) to be presented as witnesses. Some need one parent (mom or dad) and one relative. Some need one relative and the village headman(ผู้ใหญ่บ้าน). Some can be anybody. I knew about this because I called five district before getting it and the answers were so different. So, I recommend you to call his district to make sure before you go.
