Pre-nup agreement

Hello again everyone. Again I have to say that this website is awesome. Lots of questions answered here. Has anybody approached their significant others about signing a pre-nup before getting married? I know this is a touchy subject with some American women. Just not sure how to handle it besides being honest. How do women from other countries feel about this.

I assume that you are the foreigner bringing this up.

In which case, a foreigner suggesting a pre-nup to his significant other USC would make me suspicious of his/her intentions and question the validity of the eventual marriage.

i think if one spouse has considerably more assets than the other ... a prenup should be entertained. one would be foolish not to get one.

the most common cases we see here are older, successful man with a younger wife. as a y9unger foreign wife, i wouldn't be offended at all. wives are usually awarded 'x' amount for each year married, etc.

life is not a fairy tale ... love does not conquer all! best to be prepared if at all possible!

 I agree when it comes to a 50 or 60 year old US citizen marring a 18 or 20 year old girl ;)

to me it sounds kind of scary....

you go to your SO and say I love you and everything but in case we get divorced would you sign this pre-nup?

Just my 2 cents

Yeah, that's kinda what I was thinking too.

In my personal opinion , if one got enormous wealth like Oprah, Donald Trump, movie stars and very successful businessmen in the world, pre-nuptial contract is important. Because most of these wealthy people got complicated lives compared to ordinary people like us.

Most ordinary people ( not all of course) consider marriage a lifetime commitment, unless some unusual situations occur in a marriage that ends in divorce.

But if you think it's essential to your partnership , it's really up to the couple.

Good luck

Neither of us have enough money to worry about a prenup

Same here

Neither of us have enough money to worry about a prenup

us neither....

I always told my hubby "well at least you know I am not marrying you for your money."

LOL...so true for us as well!

ROFL and us too! :lol::lol::lol:

I actually had more money than my husband at the time of my K1 visa approval. But I loaned most of it to my brother and sister-in-law to help them set up a restaurant in Singapore, so hubby and I started off equally poor on the day we got married.

We are both starting out with nothing, so never bothered with a pre-nup. But I just asked the hubby and we both agree. We fully intend to stay together forever, BUT we don't know what will happen in the future, if we had any assets we would've talked about one. No offense to anyone who feels differently, but we just feel like we wouldn't want to be naive and if setting up something now could save a nasty battle later on in the very unlikely case our perfect plans don't turn out so perfect, then it is something we would deal with. Just our view!

Well, my first wife had a bunch of assets coming into the marriage and accumulated some more while we were married (inheritance stuff). When we recognized five years down the road that the marriage wasn't working for either of us, we split up in a civilized manner - whatever was in her name stayed with her, whatever was in my name stayed with me and whatever was in both our names, we split 50/50. No lawyers and hence no nastiness. How's that for an alternative to a pre-nup?

Personally, I think pre-nups are a good idea if you are financially wealthy and marrying into a not so well off family.

If you start off a marriage with about the same assets then there is no need for a pre-nup.

Getting around to suggesting it to your SO is not a bad sounding thing really, if they are not marrying you for your money then surely they won't mind signing a pre-nup.

We dont have a pre-nup cos we are poor lol, but I told my SO that if we divorce i'm having the refrigerator and taking the dog lol.

Not everyone is in it for the money but remember this world is full of money grabbers and people will do anything for an easy ride to riches. Just make sure you cover your butt.

This is my 0.02 cents anyway.

If marriage is not about the money as so many have suggested, then what's the point in a pre-nup anyway?

Personally I don't agree with it, I think it casts a shadow over the marriage from the start and I would have been highly offended if my husband had asked me to sign one. I feel that if you love someone enough to marry them then you must also trust them to be reasonable if the time should come that you no longer wish to be married.... In short, just as reasonable as you would be if that situation arose.

But hey, my marriage didn't start out with a pre-nup because we were both broke ;)
