I realise this is a really old thread now but I keep coming across it on my search for driving in Massachusetts. As we all know, one law for non-immigrants says they can drive for up to a year... Another for state law like MA says you can drive for 30 days once residency is established.

The way I understand it (or just hope) is that establishing residency is referring to legal residency. So 30 days after EAD.

In MA it only requires a bank statement to prove residency of the state to obtain a learners permit. Ive had one of those even on J-1 visas. But that would not prove that I have established US residency. I have nothing that proves I have established that. This AOS limbo period is so strange.

Im not driving after 30 days just to be on the safe side, but it would be nice to know if I can drive myself to the road test :)
