I think major factors are at play:

The perception by white America that " we are becoming the minority" and the feeling of loss of power and self determination that creates a sense of panic. White men have had to share power in ways that would have been inconceivable in 1960.

If you feel something, it must be true, whether it's supported by facts or not. It becomes almost on equal with the truth, or blots out the truth. Because it becomes 'your truth'. Feelings = truth. John highlighted this really well, even summing it with a little chat Newt had with a reporter, in which he basically adamantly plays this con game with a grin when called on it. The statistics show violent crime is down in America, with exceptions in some inner cities, but Newt discounts this based on 'feelings', feelings that people feel, feelings that show it's unsafe. It becomes a truth whether true or not. This is precisely what Trump has been doing for years in his business models, especially for his university structure, his empowerment talks, his books, his propaganda videos.. all of it. Even when questioned as to his net value, he quotes a figure which he says changes.. which is based on ''feelings.. feelings which change depending on how I feel''. Feelings = truth is something that all snake oil salesman have used for decades. They sell you lemons, miracle cures, healings from god, prosperity gospels, rag mag stories and so much more. He pointed out all the times where keynote speakers used the term 'feelings' as well, and if you look you can actually find it being repeated constantly by his camp.

When you catch him on a question, it's not that he has an answer. Listen carefully to what he says.. it's never an answer. It's feelings.. and doublespeak. How do you approach or catch a con man on a question when this is the response you receive in the media? You do this by savagely revealing what he truly is. Something the media doesn't do anymore. They're not talking about the numerous active lawsuits against him, or using the outrageous things he says against him. They merely just highlight the things he says, because it gets ratings, and letting your 'feelings' sort the rest out. The media is complicit in this relationship.

If Trump were truly the anti-Obama, he would be a conservative... by most measures that conservatives value he is not. Trump is for Trump.

It is clear that even if Trump is not a racist in his heart, he leverages that fear and hatred as is selling point.

Please let me know what about that is appealing. Obama has two degrees from Columbia and Harvard. Dedicated family man. One wife, two kids. And his wife is a lawyer, and been nothing but the definition of grace and elegance.

That's what's racist about it. The GOP is pushing a man they would NEVER back if there was a white man in the white house. That's a fact, considering they've been fighting him since day one. And look at the quality of folks running for President since 2008.

Chris Rock said it best, a black man has to fly to get where the white man can walk to. This is very evident in the case of the Obamas' vs the Trumps'. I'd wager folks coming in here to say that degrees don't matter, that doing nude spreads don't matter, nothing matters just to make Trump be better than the POTUS.

No, I am looking at the bigger picture. Certainly if you take individual policies, you will find some disagreement with traditional conservatism. But his appeal is on a much broader level - anti-political correctness; belief in America's exceptionalism; support for our military and police; and a basic belief that this is a nation of laws and that illegal immigrants have no place here.
