One report from the UK that witnesses heard a shooter say ''f'ing foreigners''.. this is similar to the conversations being had online from people discussing one of these videos, as if the person(s) were white and pretending to be ISIL. Another witness though says they heard the first shooter (McD's) as saying atypical jihadi speak...

Lauretta is the only witness who mentions jihadi rhetoric. There is other footage, witness overhearing, and questions as to the attacker's origin. They may both be accurate accounts or not at all. This is a significant day for some neo-Nazi groups, and there is some aspects to the attack which has made officials not entirely sure the motivations. It could be a jihadist yes. It could also be neo-Nazis pretending to be a jihadist. Something about this one is a bit odd.

One gunman took his own life with the gun, but it is not clear if that is one of the three, or if there were four men in total. Shooting themselves is not typical for an Islamic cultist.

There is also a name being tossed out there. It is absolutely not Islamic in any way, and is someone involved in neo-Nazi groups.

18yr old German Iranian born in Munich is lone attacker. One video shows him mentioning something about not liking Turks and then discussing that he was/had sought some kind of mental/medical treatment (quite unclear)? Some neo-Nazis had claimed responsibility as per the rumours before, probably to drum up publicity.

I'd say this case is an odd one, shooting oneself in the head isn't the typical blaze of glory jihadis like.

To think they're using Islam as an excuse is a bit of a stretch. The ideology behind these terror attacks is deeply rooted in Islamism - A fairly common phenomenon in the Middle East and European suburbs.

In the Middle East, governments radicalize.

In Europe, communities radicalize.

In America, so far only individuals radicalize.

Agreed. But what we're seeing a lot more of recently are individuals who radicalize and take matters into their own hands, without direct guidance from ISIS, Al Qaida or salafist clerics. This guy was 18. I may be wrong here, but an immediate guess would be that he blamed the West for his problems, found global jihadism to be a "cool counterculture", read what the Quran says about killing infidels, and forgot reading the passage about suicide.

Islamism in Muslim-majority ghettos in Europe is a counterculture, sort of in the same way as hip-hop culture in American inner cities. Blend Islamism and counterculture and you have a recipe for Bataclan. Between religious dogma and being "angry at society", taking the next step to "allahu akbar!" is a fairly minor one.

European passivism in how it has dealt with conservative Islam, and naively ignoring ghettos that are 90%+ Muslim set the stage for the radicalization that has been going on from Paris to Brussels to Stockholm.

Agreed. But what we're seeing a lot more of recently are individuals who radicalize and take matters into their own hands, without direct guidance from ISIS, Al Qaida or salafist clerics. This guy was 18. As I said, I could very well be wrong. He could be a mentally unstable kid who was bullied in elementary school and like the Columbine shooters decided to take his vengeance out on others. Usually however, when reports emerge of a young man of Middle Eastern heritage opens fire on civilians while shouting "allahu akbar", it more than likely has at least *something* to do with the global orthodox Islamic elephant in the room.

I'm not basing it off of Munich. I'm basing it off of having grown up in a European suburb, and having had at least one childhood friend radicalize. Not difficult to tie it into what is already fairly well-known about radicalization among young Muslims in European suburbs. There's a myth among many in America that the spread of Islamism in European suburbs is some sort of Fox News conspiracy to stigmatize Muslims. Within that worldview, I guess it is perfectly reasonable to assume that extremism frequently occurs everywhere, and that to single out Islam in any way, shape or form is just bigotry.

From the conspiratorial right-wing publication known as Politico:

"Over nine years, I witnessed the neighborhood become increasingly intolerant. Alcohol became unavailable in most shops and supermarkets; I heard stories of fanatics at the Comte des Flandres metro station who pressured women to wear the veil; Islamic bookshops proliferated, and it became impossible to buy a decent newspaper. With an unemployment rate of 30 percent, the streets were eerily empty until late in the morning. Nowhere was there a bar or café where white, black and brown people would mingle. This one focuses on Brussels. You could read similar tales however from Paris to Stockholm to Luton.
