So.. a tiny bit of help here please? I came to the US on a K1 Visa (POE July 9th, 2016) and we're getting married on August 16th (yay!) in Memphis, TN. We're getting married there due to his family, but he lives in Boston. So the question is.. would anyone happen to know how the marriage certificate works? We know that I need my birth certificate and passport for the license itself but the certificate is what we need to fill out the AOS information.

One website suggested that they give two copies of the certificate (unlike some states?) and the pastor can just give his copy in. Then we're done, we keep the certificate and use that. Or do we have to hand in the license to get the certificate? And if so, are we able to get it the next day at the office? (We're getting married on a Tuesday and looking at flying out on the Wednesday).

He hasn't quite looked into all of this and I'm so confused/busy with everything else at the moment. Any step by steps for how this goes down would be awesome.

tl;dr

How do we get the certificate needed for the AOS if we're flying out the next day?

You should check which county Memphis is located and go from there. Inquiry directly with the county's clerk office by phone or email. It's also worth it talking to your pastor, he should know how things work there

Good luck

Thank you! He'll probably have to phone in tomorrow and ask then. The pastor we're using (his from childhood) doesn't seem to know much about the process and hasn't really told us anything.

I think this is the county's website http://www.shelbycountytn.gov/index.aspx?NID=574

From what I read you can ask for certified copies by mail

I agree you should try contact the county clerks office and tell them your situation. Each state varies.

We currently live in NC, we had to apply for our marriage license, which we got straight away (Just a form my fiance and I had to fill out online at the office and sign), then we got married a week later, we had to hand the marriage license to the magistrate who married us. We both had to be present with a valid ID to collect the marriage certificate 3 days later. I would suggest getting two certified copies of the marriage certificate as you will be sending one in with your AOS package (we paid $10 for our additional certificate) As far as I understand you have to obtain the marriage licence and marriage certificate in the same county. But just call them up I'm sure they will be able to give you a lot more info.

All the best :)
